Chapter 9 - The Reading of the True Will

Forty-eight hours later, the storm had completely vanished from Manhattan. The autumn sky was a brilliant, crystal azure, illuminating the glass towers of Midtown.
The grand conference room on the fifty-second floor of the Moretti Harbor Holdings headquarters was packed with corporate attorneys, federal prosecutors, and board members.
Daniel Russo, Marcus Vance, and Vincenzo Castiglione had been formally indicted on federal racketeering, attempted murder, and corporate treason charges. With the ledger provided by Anna and corroborated by the decrypted hardware, the government's case was ironclad.
At the head of the polished obsidian conference table sat Nico Moretti, radiating absolute, undisputed authority. Seated immediately to his right was Anna Bennett, dressed in an elegant ivory suit, with Chloe sitting happily on a booster chair beside her, drawing pictures of an estate garden.
An elderly, distinguished attorney with white hair cleared his throat, adjusting a stack of legal documents.
""Ladies and gentlemen of the board,"" the attorney began, ""we have completed the formal forensic audit of the late Elena Moretti’s estate and maritime charters. With the removal of Marcus Vance, the emergency provisions of the trust have been triggered. However, upon reviewing the original sovereign documentation extracted from Box 1104, we discovered an addendum that had been suppressed by Vance for the past five years.""
The room grew dead silent. Nico looked at the attorney with a furrowed brow. ""What addendum?""
The attorney turned his gaze directly toward Anna. ""Mr. Moretti, when your late wife, Elena, established the legacy trust, she was receiving experimental treatment at St. Jude’s Children's Medical Center. During her stay, she became exceptionally close to a senior patient advocate and retired educator who volunteered every day in the hospice ward—a woman named Margaret Bennett.""
Anna froze. Her heart stopped. ""My mother?""
""Yes, Miss Bennett,"" the attorney said gently, smiling over his glasses. ""Your mother spent hours with Elena during her final weeks, comforting her, reading to her, and listening to her fears about leaving her infant daughter in a world surrounded by violence. Elena was so profoundly moved by Margaret Bennett's kindness, integrity, and utter incorruptibility that she executed a private legal codicil.""
The attorney picked up a parchment document bearing Elena Moretti’s authentic signature and seal.
""The codicil stipulates that in the event of Marcus Vance's removal or malfeasance, legal co-guardianship of Chloe's sovereign trust—and fifteen percent of the voting shares of Moretti Harbor Holdings—would pass not to an anonymous bank, but to Margaret Bennett or her direct surviving heir.""
Gasps rippled across the boardroom.
Anna stared at the document, tears welling up in her eyes. Her mother had never spoken of it because Vance had buried the paperwork the moment Elena died, keeping Margaret's family in poverty while using her hospice room as a drop point for the stolen cipher. Margaret had died believing she was just comforting a lonely young mother, never knowing she had changed her daughter's destiny forever.
""Miss Bennett,"" the attorney continued, ""you are no longer a custodian. You are an executive trustee and owner of fifteen percent of one of the largest maritime logistics conglomerates on the Eastern Seaboard. Your current equity value is estimated at seventy-five million dollars.""
Anna looked at the papers, her hands trembling. Five days ago, she had been walking through the freezing rain with forty dollars in her pocket, worrying about how to pay for heat in a cramped, drafty apartment.
She looked over at Nico.
Nico wasn't surprised. A warm, breathtaking smile illuminated his dark, handsome features. He reached under the table, his strong, warm hand covering hers, his thumb gently caressing her knuckles.
""Elena always had better instincts about people than I did,"" Nico said, his voice soft enough that only she could hear. ""She knew that one day, my world would need saving by someone with a real heart.""

Chloe reached over, grabbing Anna’s other hand. ""Does this mean Anna is my family now, Daddy?""
Nico looked into Anna's hazel eyes, his gaze filled with an unspoken promise that reached far beyond boardrooms and balance sheets. ""Only if she'll have us, princess. Only if she'll have us.""
