Chapter 5 - The Snake's Trap

Anna watched the monitor in mounting horror. Marcus Vance walked through the ruined foyer of the Moretti mansion as if he owned the title deed. He stepped over the bodies of fallen mercenaries with utter disregard, brushing a speck of plaster dust from his cashmere sleeve.

""Nico!"" Vance’s voice crackled through the estate's internal intercom system, amplified by the bunker's speakers. ""Come out, boy. We know you’re lurking in the shadows. But this little empire ends tonight.""

In the bunker, Anna watched Nico take cover behind a pulverized marble pillar on the upper mezzanine, his ammunition clearly running low. Three of his guards were down, and Marco was pinned behind the central fountain, bleeding from a shrapnel wound to his leg.

""You're a traitor, Marcus,"" Nico’s voice echoed back across the grand gallery, calm and lethal. ""My father treated you like a brother. He gave you thirty percent of Harbor Holdings.""

""Your father was a sentimental fool who went soft in his old age!"" Vance sneered, his cultured mask completely slipping away. ""He wanted to turn our shipping docks into clean import-export hubs. Do you know how much money we lost walking away from Castiglione’s syndicates? Hundreds of millions! And then you created that ridiculous widow trust for Elena, locking up forty percent of the voting shares for an infant girl!""

Russo stepped forward, raising the detonator. ""We don't need Chloe alive anymore, Nico! With Reed dead and your estate burning to the ground, the board will declare you incapacitated under emergency bylaws. Marcus takes executive control of the maritime charters by sunrise!""

Down in the bunker, Anna’s heart hammered against her ribs. Reed was dead. The plot was total. If Nico fell here, Chloe would never leave this concrete room alive. The hitmen would burn the estate, discover the bunker through the ventilation shafts, and finish the job.

She looked at Chloe, who was curled up on the cot, trembling under the foil blanket.

""Chloe,"" Anna whispered softly, crouching down to meet the child's tearful eyes. ""I need you to be the bravest girl in the world for five minutes. Can you do that for me?""

Chloe nodded hesitantly, wiping her wet cheeks with the back of her sleeve. ""Are you going to find Daddy?""

""I'm going to help him,"" Anna said, her voice steadying with sudden, fierce resolve. ""There is a small ventilation duct behind the water tank that connects to the old kitchen pantry above the foyer. I'm thin enough to crawl through it. I need you to stay right here, keep this emergency radio in your hand, and do not make a sound until you hear my voice.""

Anna didn't hesitate. She grabbed a heavy tactical flashlight and a steel wrench from the workbench. Slipping behind the water tank, she unlatched the maintenance grate and pulled herself into the narrow, dusty metal shaft.

Her custodial career had taken her into every claustrophobic crawlspace and service tunnel in Manhattan. She knew how industrial ducts were built. She ignored the scrapes on her knees and elbows, crawling upward toward the faint scent of smoke and gunpowder.

Two minutes later, she peered through the slatted exhaust vent overlooking the mezzanine right above the grand gallery.

Directly below her stood Daniel Russo, his eyes glued to the pillars where Nico was pinned down. Russo was holding the gas detonator loosely in his right hand, grinning like a hyena while Vance barked orders to the two surviving Castiglione gunmen.

Nico was out of position. If he leaned out to fire, the gunmen would cut him down instantly.

Anna took a deep, steadying breath. She raised the heavy iron wrench, aimed through the slats, and kicked the louvered vent with all her strength.

The metal grate gave way with a violent crash. Anna hurled the heavy iron wrench downward with pinpoint accuracy, honed by years of manual labor.

The steel tool struck Daniel Russo squarely across the temple.

Russo dropped like a stone, the detonator slipping from his fingers and clattering across the marble floor.

""What the—!"" Vance shouted, whipping around in pure shock.

That split-second distraction was all Nico Moretti needed.

Nico lunged from behind the marble column like a striking panther. Two deafening shots roared from his pistol. The two Castiglione gunmen collapsed instantly.

Vance scrambled for the detonator on the floor, but Nico’s combat boot came down on his wrist with a sickening crunch. Vance screamed in agony as Nico kicked the explosive trigger far across the hall into the fountain pool.

Nico looked up at the shattered ceiling vent, where Anna hung halfway out of the duct, dust in her hair and fierce defiance in her eyes.

""Bennett,"" Nico called out, a dark, breathless grin breaking across his blood-streaked face. ""Remind me never to shortchange your custodial invoice.""
