Chapter 3 - Blood on the Ledger

The revelation of the snake tattoo ignited an immediate reaction in Nico. He stepped toward his desk and slammed his fist down onto the polished surface with such force that a crystal decanter jumped.
""Vincenzo,"" Nico growled through gritted teeth. ""The Castiglione syndicate. They’ve crossed into Manhattan.""
Anna gently guided Chloe to sit on a leather armchair, handing her a coloring book from the shelf to keep her distracted before turning back to Nico. ""Who is Vincenzo? And why would he be working with Russo to take Chloe?""
""Vincenzo Castiglione runs the Brooklyn docks,"" Nico explained, pacing the rug with predatory agitation. ""Five years ago, before my father died and passed leadership of Moretti Development to me, the Castiglione family controlled every illegal shipment coming through the East River. We forced them out, legitimized our shipping routes, and cut off their extortion rings. Vincenzo swore he would dismantle the Moretti line from the inside out.""
He stopped, his intense gaze locking onto Anna. ""Elena’s family—the family that founded the widow trust—originally held the historical maritime charters for those docks. If Vincenzo takes control of that offshore fund, he doesn't just steal twenty-three million dollars. He gains legal corporate proxy rights over forty percent of the commercial berths in New York Harbor. He could flood the city with untraceable contraband overnight.""
At that moment, the library doors flew open again. A young technician in glasses sprinted inside holding a laptop linked to a portable decryption hub.
""Mr. Moretti, we bypassed the initial firewall on the micro-SD card,"" the tech panted. ""It’s not just bank account balances. It’s an automated dead-man’s switch ledger. It contains every transaction, every offshore routing number, and wire transfers dating back four years.""
""Show me,"" Nico commanded.
Anna stepped up beside him, peering over the screen. The rows of alphanumeric codes and financial institutions flashed rapidly. But as the tech scrolled down to the underlying digital signatures, Anna gasped.
""Wait! Stop there!"" she pointed at a specific line. ""Look at the authorization stamps for the June transfers.""
Nico leaned closer, his eyes narrowing. ""Those are corporate digital keys issued only to board members of Moretti Harbor Holdings.""
""No,"" Anna corrected, her custodial memory clicking into place with absolute precision. ""Look at the terminal IP address associated with that key. It didn't come from your corporate headquarters in Midtown. That IP belongs to a residential line registered on the Upper East Side. I recognize that specific subnet prefix because I spent three months cleaning a penthouse on Park Avenue owned by your head of corporate operations—Marcus Vance.""
The room went dead silent.
Marco cursed violently under his breath. ""Marcus Vance? He’s been your father's chief financial officer for twenty-five years! He practically watched you grow up!""
""Which is why he had access to Elena's legacy,"" Nico said, his voice dropping into a register of arctic menace. ""He knew the encryption keys. He knew the terms of the trust. And he used Russo and Peter Reed to orchestrate the abduction so it would look like an external kidnapping gone wrong.""
Anna connected the final pieces of the horrifying puzzle. ""Reed didn't abandon Chloe because he was careless. He brought her to that bakery because Russo and Vance ordered him to hand her over to the Castigliones. But when Reed saw the man with the snake tattoo, he realized they weren't just holding Chloe for ransom—they intended to eliminate all witnesses, including Reed himself. Reed hid Chloe on that bench, hoping against hope that someone would find her before the kill squad came out the front door.""
""And you walked down that street at 4:17 in the morning,"" Nico murmured, turning to look at Anna with something approaching reverence. ""You interrupted an execution and a corporate coup armed with nothing but a gray thrift-store coat.""
Suddenly, the estate’s perimeter alarms began to blare. A piercing siren echoed across the grounds, followed immediately by the sharp, deafening staccato of automatic gunfire near the main security gates.
Chloe screamed, dropping her crayons and curling into a ball on the leather armchair.

Anna surged forward instantly, shielding the little girl with her own body. ""Nico! What is that?""
Marco drew a customized black handgun from his shoulder holster, his radio crackling with frantic shouts from the gatehouse. ""Boss! Two armored delivery trucks just rammed through the outer iron gates! They're flying Castiglione colors! They've breached the courtyard!""
