Chapter 8 - The Queen's Gambit

The tension inside the subterranean vault reached a point of absolute detonation. Vincenzo Castiglione stood barely ten feet away, his silenced pistol trained unwavering on Nico's heart. His four mercenaries blocked the only exit, their hands resting on concealed submachine guns beneath heavy coats.

Chloe whimpered, shrinking behind Anna’s coat. Anna’s hand dropped instinctively, resting on the child's head, anchoring her.

""Let the girl and the woman leave, Vincenzo,"" Nico said, his voice flat, devoid of fear. He stepped slightly forward, placing his body directly between the guns and his family. ""This is between you and me. You want the docks? Take the bonds. Leave them out of it.""

""You don't dictate terms here, Moretti,"" Vincenzo chuckled, his cold eyes flicking over Anna with insulting dismissiveness. ""Who is this, anyway? Your new mistress? A cleaner you pulled off the street to play mommy? She was stupid enough to dig up the cipher that Vance hid in her mother's hospice records. She did my job for me.""

Anna felt a surge of white-hot anger drown out her terror. ""My mother died in pain while your scum used her medical room to hide stolen property. You aren't a mastermind, Castiglione. You're a parasite.""

Vincenzo’s face darkened, his finger tightening on the trigger. ""Shut your mouth, maid, before I put a bullet through it.""

""Go ahead,"" Anna challenged, stepping out from behind Nico, her eyes blazing. ""Shoot me in a Federal Reserve repository under four thousand high-definition security cameras. But before you pull that trigger, look at the digital console on Box 1104.""

Vincenzo frowned, his eyes darting for a fraction of a second toward the wall.

The screen wasn't just showing ACCESS GRANTED. A bright red countdown timer was flashing: 00:45... 00:44...

""When I slotted that cipher into the dual-key console,"" Anna said, her voice dropping into a deadly whisper, ""I didn't just unlock the drawer. I engaged the fail-safe protocol Russo designed. If the primary biometric verification of Elena Moretti isn't confirmed within two minutes of box extraction, the entire vault sector automatically seals and triggers a high-density halon fire-suppression discharge. In forty seconds, this room will be completely depleted of oxygen.""

Vincenzo’s mercenaries panicked, their eyes darting nervously toward the heavy steel blast doors behind them. ""Boss, is that true?"" one of them muttered.

""She’s bluffing!"" Vincenzo snarled, though his aim wavered.

""Test me,"" Anna said, holding his gaze without blinking. ""I spent five years reading Russo’s private operational files while you were hiding in Brooklyn. Do you think I'd walk into a trap without setting one of my own?""

""Kill them all!"" Vincenzo roared, raising his weapon.

Before he could pull the trigger, Nico moved.

He didn't draw a gun—he snatched the heavy brass deposit drawer from the wall and hurled it with devastating force straight into Vincenzo’s chest. The impact shattered the mafia boss's sternum, sending him crashing backward to the marble floor as his gun discharged harmlessly into the ceiling.

At the exact same moment, the heavy vault doors groaned. Marco and four federal tactical agents burst into the room from the outer corridor, weapons drawn.

""Federal agents! Drop your weapons! Drop them now!"" Marco bellowed, flanked by badges and tactical armor.

Vincenzo’s mercenaries dropped their guns instantly, throwing their hands into the air as the agents swarmed the room, tackling the hitmen to the floor and slamming zip-ties onto their wrists.

Nico moved forward, kicking Vincenzo's fallen pistol into the corner, then stepped heavily onto the wounded mobster’s neck, pinning him to the marble. ""The halon system was a bluff, Vincenzo,"" Nico whispered coldly into his ear. ""Anna just bought the thirty seconds my men needed to bring the FBI special task force downstairs. Enjoy Florence Supermax.""

Anna let out a ragged breath, dropping to her knees and pulling Chloe into a fierce, trembling embrace. ""It's over, baby. It's all over.""

Chloe wrapped her tiny arms around Anna's neck, crying tears of relief. ""You were so brave, Anna. You stopped the snake man.""

Nico walked over and knelt beside them. He looked at Anna—not as a billionaire looking at an employee, but as a man looking at the woman who had saved everything he loved.

May you like

""You lied about the halon gas,"" Nico murmured, a look of profound amazement in his eyes.

""Of course I lied,"" Anna whispered, a tear finally escaping her eye and rolling down her cheek. ""I’m an accountant, Nico. I know how to make numbers look terrifying.""
