Chapter 4 - The Siege at Midnight

Chaos erupted throughout the mansion. Heavy blackout shutters slammed down over the floor-to-ceiling library windows with mechanical thuds, locking out the stormy night and plunging the room into the glow of emergency amber lights.

""They aren't here to negotiate,"" Nico said with lethal calm. He walked to a concealed wall panel beside the bookshelf, entered a six-digit code, and revealed an armory stocked with tactical gear and weapons. He pulled out a lightweight ballistic vest and stepped directly toward Anna.

""Put this on,"" he ordered, holding out the vest.

Anna shook her head. ""Put it on Chloe! She's the one they want!""

""Chloe has a custom Kevlar-lined carrier in the safe room,"" Nico countered, his voice leaving no room for argument as he swiftly strapped the heavy vest over Anna's oversized sweater. His hands were steady, his knuckles brushing against her ribs with surprising gentleness despite the madness outside. ""If they take you, they take the only living witness who can authenticate Vance's handwriting and explain the ledger's origin to federal authorities. You are just as dangerous to them as I am.""

He scooped Chloe into his left arm while cocking a tactical shotgun with his right. ""Marco, initiate Protocol Zero. Cut main power to the lower levels and push the intruders into the central gallery kill zone. We move to the subterranean bunker.""

""On it, Boss!"" Marco barked into his headset, leading two heavily armed guards into the hallway to form a defensive wall.

Anna stayed glued to Nico's side as they navigated a hidden service stairwell behind the library. The sound of grenade concussions and shattered marble reverberated through the stone foundations. The vibration rattled her teeth, but she refused to surrender to hysteria. When she glanced at Chloe, the little girl was burying her face into Nico’s neck, weeping silently without making a sound—a heartbreaking sign of a child who had grown up surrounded by existential danger.

""Down here!"" Nico kicked open a reinforced steel blast door at the bottom of the spiral stairs, revealing a concrete subterranean safe room outfitted with communication banks, medical supplies, and independent air filtration.

He placed Chloe on a cot in the corner, wrapping her in an emergency thermal blanket. ""Stay down, princess. Daddy will handle this.""

""Don't leave, Daddy!"" Chloe sobbed, reaching out her tiny hands. ""The snake man is upstairs!""

Nico paused, a flash of pure vulnerability crossing his aristocratic features. He looked at Anna. ""Stay with her. Lock this vault from the inside. The control panel is to the left of the door. Enter 0-4-1-7.""

Anna blinked. ""4:17? The time I found Chloe?""

Nico's dark eyes bore into hers with searing intensity. ""The moment my daughter was saved. If I don't return in twenty minutes, use the secondary escape tunnel behind that water tank. It leads to a storm drain half a mile south in the woods. Take Chloe and run.""

""Nico, wait!"" Anna reached out, her fingers catching the lapel of his tactical jacket before she could stop herself. The raw danger surrounding him was suffocating, but beneath the armor and the mafia legend, she saw a desperate father fighting for his family. ""Don't die out there. She needs you.""

A faint, devastatingly handsome smirk touched Nico's lips. ""I don't have permission to die yet, Anna. Not until I buy you a proper coat.""

He spun around, racked the slide of his weapon, and stepped through the heavy steel portal. The vault door groaned as Anna slammed the hydraulic lock lever, sealing herself and Chloe inside the soundproof fortress.

For ten grueling minutes, Anna sat on the concrete floor, holding Chloe tightly against her chest, whispering nursery rhymes into the child's hair while watching the vault's monitor feed.

On the grainy security monitors, Anna watched the horror unfold. Men in tactical black uniforms with snake insignias were swarming the grand foyer, firing indiscriminately into antique furniture and marble columns. But Nico and his inner circle moved like phantoms through the estate they knew intimately. Nico appeared from shadows, firing with deadly precision, systematically cutting down the attackers one by one.

Then, on the main monitor, the screen flickered. A man walked through the shattered entrance doors wearing an expensive charcoal trench coat and carrying an umbrella.

It was Marcus Vance. Beside him, clutching a bleeding shoulder, was Daniel Russo.

Anna gasped. They hadn't just sent hitmen—the masterminds had arrived to oversee the extraction personally. And in Russo's hand was a remote detonation device wired to the estate’s gas lines.
