Chapter 10 - A Coat for Autumn

One year later.

The crisp October wind swept through Central Park, sending golden and crimson leaves swirling across the paved paths near the Conservatory Water.

The afternoon sun cast a warm, honeyed glow over the city. Near the edge of the pond, six-year-old Chloe laughed joyfully, steering a miniature remote-controlled sailboat across the rippling water. She wore a bright red wool coat, her cheeks flushed with health and happiness, her dark curls bouncing in the autumn breeze.

Sitting on a wooden bench nearby, watching the little girl with deep, contented affection, was Anna.

Her life had transformed in ways she could never have imagined, yet she remained fiercely grounded. As co-trustee of Moretti Harbor Holdings, she had overseen the complete ethical restructuring of the company's port operations, directing millions of dollars into public schools, custodial worker pensions, and a state-of-the-art memory care wing at St. Jude’s dedicated to her mother's memory.

Footsteps approached along the cobblestone path.

Anna looked up to see Nico walking toward her. He wore a dark cashmere sweater and tailored trousers, looking relaxed and strikingly handsome, completely free from the grim tension that had once haunted his every step. The criminal syndicates that had plagued his family had been dismantled, replaced by legitimate enterprise and an unshakable partnership with the woman beside him.

In his hands, Nico carried two steaming cups of hot cider and an elegant, wrapped box tied with an ivory silk ribbon.

""You're late, Mr. Moretti,"" Anna teased, a radiant smile touching her lips as he sat down beside her on the bench, handing her a cup of cider.

""I had to make a very important stop on Fifth Avenue,"" Nico replied, his dark eyes sparkling with warmth. He set the box on her lap. ""Happy anniversary, Anna.""

Anna looked at the box, surprised. ""Anniversary? Our foundation gala isn't until next month.""

""Not that anniversary,"" Nico said softly, reaching out to tuck a stray lock of hair behind her ear. His fingers lingered against her jawline, sending that same familiar, intoxicating warmth through her chest. ""Exactly one year ago today, at 4:17 in the morning, an angel in a forty-dollar gray coat found my daughter sleeping outside a closed bakery in the rain. She saved my child's life, healed my broken family, and taught a cold man how to live again.""

Anna’s breath caught in her throat. Her fingers gently untied the silk ribbon and lifted the lid of the box.

Inside lay a breathtaking, bespoke winter coat made of the softest heather-gray Italian cashmere, lined with deep navy silk and finished with hand-carved silver buttons. Stitched discreetly into the interior lining, right over the heart, was a delicate embroidery: 4:17 AM — Forever Safe.

Tears of pure happiness welled in Anna's eyes. She looked up at Nico, overwhelmed by the depth of his devotion. ""Nico... it's exquisite.""

""It's warm,"" Nico murmured, his gaze dropping to her lips. ""Just like you.""

""Daddy! Anna! Look!"" Chloe shouted, running up to the bench and jumping between them, pointing excitedly toward the pond where her little boat was leading the race against other children's vessels. ""My boat won! The Elena won!""

Nico scooped his daughter into his arms, kissing her cheek, while his other arm wrapped securely around Anna’s shoulders, pulling her close against his side. Anna leaned into his warmth, resting her head on his shoulder as the three of them looked out over the sunlit park.

The rain had long since stopped, the cold was gone, and the maid who had once walked the dark streets alone had finally found her way home."
