Chapter 9 - The Purge of the Syndicate

Before the sun rose over the Chicago skyline, the purging of the Moretti syndicate was carried out with surgical, merciless precision.

Led by Luca, squads of loyal Moretti soldiers raided the shell companies, private offices, and hidden bank accounts Marcus had spent two decades establishing. Every corrupt port authority official who had taken Bellini money was dismissed or turned over to internal affairs. Every mercenary connected to the ambush was hunted down or forced into permanent exile.

By noon, the federal courthouse steps were swarming with reporters and television cameras. Marcus Bellini had been discovered precisely where Dante promised: bound in heavy chains, shivering in the cold morning light, with the definitive proof of twenty years of syndicate murder and corruption resting at his feet. The news anchors hailed it as the greatest underworld collapse in modern history, entirely unaware that the strings had been pulled by the very man Marcus had sought to destroy.

Back at the Moretti estate, construction crews worked under Luca’s watchful eye. The two-way mirror was hauled out into the courtyard, shattered into a thousand glittering shards with heavy sledgehammers, and tossed into an incinerator. The observation room was completely gutted, filled with solid concrete, and sealed behind three layers of brickwork.

Dante stood on the rear terrace, watching the autumn leaves drift across the stone fountain. For the first time in his life, the invisible weight that had rested on his shoulders since his father’s death seemed to lift. The shadows that had haunted the corridors of his home were gone. The silence in the house was no longer tense or threatening; it was peaceful.

Luca stepped onto the terrace, wiping sweat from his brow, holding a fresh cup of coffee. He offered it to Dante, who accepted it with a nod.

""It is done, boss,"" Luca reported. ""Marcus has been denied bail. The federal prosecutors are pushing for three consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. Katherine boarded a vessel out of Baltimore an hour ago. She won't be coming back.""

""And the family captains?"" Dante asked, taking a sip of the hot coffee.

""They gathered at the downtown club an hour ago,"" Luca replied with a broad grin. ""Every single one of them kissed your ring in absentia. They know who runs this city, Dante. Your father would have been proud.""

""My father would have told me to clean my house sooner,"" Dante murmured, looking out toward the driveway as a sleek black town car pulled through the iron gates.

""Who is that?"" Luca asked, reaching instinctively toward his coat before recognizing the vehicle.

""That,"" Dante smiled warmly, ""is the only real debt I have left to settle.""
