Chapter 2 - The Whispering Gallery

By mid-afternoon, the rain returned, drumming a furious rhythm against the leaded glass windows of the estate. Dante sat in the drawing room, exactly where the observer behind the mirror could see his profile clearly. He had deliberately spread false shipping manifests across the marble coffee table—documents indicating a multimillion-dollar shipment of precious uncut gems scheduled to arrive at Calumet Terminal at midnight on Friday.
The door opened with a familiar, delicate click. Isabella walked in. She was breathtaking—a vision of dark curls, high cheekbones, and an effortless elegance draped in emerald silk. She carried a porcelain tray with two cups of espresso, her smile radiant and disarming. For six months, Dante had believed that smile belonged entirely to him. Now, as she approached, he noticed the microscopic delay in her eyes, the subtle way her gaze swept over the papers on the table before landing on his face.
""You work too hard, amore,"" Isabella purred, leaning down to press her soft lips against his cheek. Her perfume, a rare blend of black jasmine and amber, washed over him. It was the same scent that had lingered near the service hallway behind the mirror the night before. ""Marcus mentioned you seemed distracted at breakfast. Are the dock workers giving you trouble again?""
Dante caught her hand, kissing her knuckles with practiced affection, hiding the revulsion that clawed at his chest. ""Just numbers and logistics, darling. The Calumet shipment is larger than usual. If it clears without federal interference, we secure our northern supply routes for the next decade.""
""That sounds wonderful,"" she murmured, resting her hands lightly on his shoulders, exactly as she had on the night she gave him the mirror. Her thumbs caressed the base of his neck. ""You deserve peace, Dante. Your father spent his whole life fighting shadows. You shouldn't have to carry that burden forever.""
""My father trusted the wrong people,"" Dante said evenly, looking directly into her eyes. He saw a fleeting shadow of panic flutter across her pupils before she smoothed it over with a melodic laugh.
""Well, he didn't have me to take care of him,"" she whispered playfully, turning toward the silver-framed mirror to adjust a stray lock of hair. ""It really is a magnificent piece, isn't it? It reflects the room so cleanly.""
""It shows me everything I need to see,"" Dante replied smoothly.
Later that evening, after Isabella had retired to her private suite claiming a sudden migraine, Dante slipped down into the estate's subterranean wine cellar. Luca was waiting between the dusty racks of vintage Barolo, illuminated only by the cold blue light of a rugged tactical tablet.
""You were right, boss,"" Luca said under his breath, turning the screen toward Dante. ""We tapped into the fiber optic line spliced into the mirror's housing. The signal isn't transmitting out to an external server. It’s hardwired directly into the old caretaker’s tunnels beneath the west wing. And look at the playback from twenty minutes ago.""
Dante leaned over the screen. The video was crisp, taken from a hidden pinhole camera Luca had slipped into the service cavity earlier that afternoon. On the screen sat Isabella. The sweet, affectionate woman from the drawing room was gone. In her place was a cold, calculating operative wearing a headset, taking detailed notes on a digital pad. Sitting on the metal stool beside her was Marcus Bellini.
""The manifests are out,"" Isabella’s voice came through the tablet's speaker, devoid of warmth. ""He believes the Calumet run is completely secure. Friday night, we take the entire shipment and leave Dante with the federal task force on his doorstep.""
""And the boy himself?"" Marcus’s gravelly voice asked from the shadows.

""The poison is ready,"" Isabella answered coldly, tapping a small glass vial in her pocket. ""The same compound you used on his father twenty years ago. It leaves no trace in the coronary tissue. By Saturday morning, the Moretti bloodline ends, and the syndicate belongs to us.""
Dante stood up straight in the damp chill of the cellar, his eyes turning to black ice. The betrayal was complete, absolute, and ancient. ""They want a tragedy,"" Dante whispered, a terrifying smile carving its way across his face. ""We are going to give them a masterpiece.""
