Chapter 10 - A Reflection of Hope

The car door opened, and Elena stepped out onto the gravel driveway, looking around the grand estate with hesitant wonder. From the other side of the vehicle, little Sophie bounded out, wearing a new woolen red coat, her one-eared stuffed bear clutched tightly in her little arm.

Dante descended the stone steps of the terrace to meet them. He walked without the tense, guarded posture of a mafia boss waiting for a bullet. He walked like a man who finally owned his own ground.

Elena curtsied nervously, but Dante immediately reached out and took her hand, stopping the subservient gesture. ""No more bowing, Elena. Not in this house.""

""Mr. Moretti,"" Elena said, her voice shaking with emotion. ""Your men brought us back from the safe house. They told us the danger had passed. But... why bring us back here?""

""Because you belong here,"" Dante replied gently. ""The carriage house is yours, fully renovated and staffed. Furthermore, the deed to the property in Maine has been placed in your name. You are no longer a maid in this estate, Elena. You are the director of the new Moretti Foundation, providing housing and legal protection for families trapped under syndicate debts.""

Elena covered her mouth with both hands, tears of disbelief streaming down her cheeks. ""Dante... I don't know what to say. We did nothing to deserve this.""

""You gave me the truth,"" Dante said, crouching down on the gravel until he was eye-to-eye with little Sophie, just as he had done on the night this all began.

Sophie looked at him with the same flat, unblinking seriousness. Her cheeks were rosy from the autumn wind. ""Mr. Dante, did you fix the mirror?""

Dante laughed—a genuine, deep, melodic laugh that had not echoed through the Moretti estate in twenty long years.

""I did something better, Sophie,"" Dante said softly, reaching out to gently adjust the crooked ear on her little stuffed bear. ""I destroyed it. We don't need magic mirrors in this house anymore.""

""Why?"" the little girl asked curiously.

""Because,"" Dante said, standing tall and offering his hands to both mother and daughter as he led them inside toward the warmth of the grand estate, ""from now on, when we look around this home, the only things looking back at us are the people who truly love us.""

Inside the grand drawing room, the afternoon sun flooded through the high arched windows, illuminating a massive new portrait hanging on the freshly painted wall. It was a painting of Antonio Moretti, smiling peacefully beside his young son, bathed in brilliant, unobstructed light."
