Chapter 6 - Shadows Unveiled

The silence inside the hidden room became suffocating. The realization struck Marcus Bellini like a physical blow, draining the color from his face until his skin looked like parchment.

Dante did not stand. He simply raised his glass toward the mirror, offering the exact same courteous salute he had given nights before. Then, he tapped a button on his phone.

An intercom speaker mounted in the ceiling of the observation room clicked on, and Dante’s voice came through with crystal clarity, smooth and devoid of mercy.

""You really should have checked the depth of the frame, Katherine,"" Dante said, his voice echoing in the confined space. ""Did you honestly believe a five-year-old girl was the only person capable of seeing through your glass?""

Isabella gasped, stumbling back against the monitoring desk, knocking over her bourbon. ""He knows my name... Father, he knows!""

""Shut up!"" Marcus hissed, drawing his silver revolver from his waistband. His aged hands were shaking violently with rage and terror. ""He’s bluffing! He’s trapped in the drawing room! Carlo will be back with the men—""

""Carlo is dead, Marcus,"" Dante’s voice interrupted calmly through the speaker. ""The mercenaries you hired walked directly into a coordinated trap between my primary enforcers and the tactical task force. The federal agents aren't looking for me. They are currently arresting your shell company executives for high treason and conspiracy to murder federal officers. You gave them the tip, Marcus. You just forgot to make sure the evidence didn't trace back to your own basement.""

Marcus rushed toward the heavy steel access door at the rear of the observation room, slamming his shoulder against the latch. It did not budge. The electronic keypad flashed an angry red: LOCKED DOWN.

""You spent twenty years living in my father’s shadow,"" Dante continued, his image in the mirror standing up with predatory slowness. He walked toward the glass until his face was inches away from where Marcus stood shivering on the other side. ""You ate at his table. You held my hand when we buried him. Did you think his ghost would never demand payment?""

""Your father was a butcher!"" Marcus screamed at the glass, firing a bullet directly into the center of the mirror.

The shot was deafening in the small space, but the glass did not shatter. It was reinforced ballistic polycarbonate, spider-webbing slightly around the impact point but holding completely firm.

In the drawing room, Dante didn't even flinch. He didn't blink. He simply looked at the bullet mark, smiled cold amusement, and nodded to Luca.

Luca stepped forward with a heavy hydraulic breaching ram. With three thunderous impacts, the decorative silver frame and the surrounding drywall were torn away from the masonry. The entire false wall collapsed inward in a cloud of white plaster dust, exposing the filthy, cramped surveillance nest to the grand expanse of the Moretti drawing room.

Isabella dropped her weapon, coughing in the dust, her face streaked with tears and mascara. She fell to her knees before Dante, her pride crumbling into pathetic desperation. ""Dante, please! He forced me! Marcus raised me in isolation—he made me do this! I loved you, Dante! I swear on my life, what we had was real!""

Dante looked down at her, his eyes devoid of emotion. ""You gave me a mirror so you could watch me die, Katherine. The only thing real about you was the poison in your pocket.""
