Chapter 5 - The Ambush at Calumet

Friday night arrived wrapped in a dense, freezing fog sweeping off Lake Michigan. The Calumet docks were a labyrinth of rusted shipping containers, towering cranes, and greasy black water that swallowed the yellow glow of distant streetlamps.

At eleven-thirty, three unmarked black freight trucks rumbled through gate seven, their heavy diesel engines roaring against the night wind. High above on the shipping cranes, sniper scopes adjusted their focus, while across the perimeter, unmarked black vans filled with federal tactical units sat in total darkness, engines idling silently.

Inside the estate's hidden observation room, Marcus Bellini and Isabella sat shoulder to shoulder, their faces bathed in the greenish glow of four surveillance monitors. One monitor displayed the interior of the lead truck, where a man wearing Dante’s signature charcoal trench coat and flat cap sat behind the wheel, his face obscured by the shadow of the brim.

""Look at him,"" Isabella sneered, her voice dripping with venomous satisfaction. ""The mighty Dante Moretti, driving a truck like a common street thug. He really thought I loved him. He was ready to give me the keys to his entire empire.""

Marcus chuckled, pouring two tumblers of aged bourbon from a silver flask. ""Arrogance was his father’s downfall, and it is his. Antonio Moretti thought he was a king, but he was nothing more than a peasant who got lucky with street muscle. Tonight, the Moretti name is erased from Chicago history.""

Suddenly, the monitors erupted into flashing chaos. Blinding floodlights flared across the Calumet terminal as federal sirens wailed into the freezing air. Over the audio feed, amplified voices shouted: ""Federal agents! Cut the engines and step out with your hands up!""

On the screen, the lead truck slammed on its brakes, tires screeching against wet asphalt. The driver kicked open the door, rolled into the shadows of a container, and vanished into the fog. Simultaneously, heavy gunfire erupted from the south—Carlo’s mercenary hit team had opened fire with automatic rifles, mistakenly assuming Dante was trapped inside the crossfire between federal authorities and their ambush.

""It’s happening!"" Isabella gasped, clutching Marcus’s arm in triumph. ""Carlo is tearing them apart! The feds will blame the Moretti crew for opening fire, and the state will clean up whatever is left!""

""Raise your glass, my daughter,"" Marcus smiled broadly, clinking his tumbler against hers. ""Twenty years of waiting. Twenty years of smiling at that boy, playing the loyal dog while we drained his accounts from the inside. To the new dynasty of the Bellini family.""

They drank deeply, watching the fiery explosion of a fuel drum illuminate the Calumet monitors. For five glorious minutes, Marcus and Isabella basked in the euphoria of total victory.

Then, from the drawing room directly on the other side of the two-way mirror, a sharp, metallic sound echoed.

Clink.

The sound of crystal meeting glass.

Marcus froze, his glass hovering inches from his lips. Isabella’s smile vanished, her eyes darting toward the mirror.

Through the tinted glass, the drawing room chandelier suddenly flared to life with blinding, crystal brilliance. Sitting gracefully on the velvet sofa, entirely untouched by smoke, fog, or blood, was Dante Moretti. He was wearing a pristine black three-piece suit, his hair meticulously combed, casually sipping a glass of cognac.

Beside him stood Luca, holding an automatic rifle aimed dead-center at the mirror.

And on the table in front of Dante sat a digital tablet, displaying the exact live feed of the observation room they were currently cowering inside.
