Chapter 4 - The Puppet Master’s Trap

Thursday arrived with deceptive serenity. The estate hummed with its usual rhythmic luxury: groundskeepers manicuring the sprawling lawns, private chefs preparing delicate pastries, and armed guards patrolling the outer fences with Belgian Malinois hounds. To Isabella, Dante appeared completely oblivious, playing the role of the stressed mafia boss juggling an impending multi-million-dollar empire expansion.
At dinner, Dante sat at the head of the banquet table, sipping red wine while Isabella sat across from him in an alluring red dress. Marcus was present as well, playing the part of the seasoned mentor offering calm reassurance.
""The dock workers are secure, Dante,"" Marcus said, carving his steak with practiced precision. ""I spoke with the union boss this afternoon. The container will be offloaded at gate seven precisely at eleven-forty-five. You only need to oversee the transfer into our armored trucks.""
""I don't usually oversee street-level handoffs myself, Marcus,"" Dante remarked, tilting his head with an amused expression. ""That is work for captains, not the don.""
""Under normal circumstances, yes,"" Marcus replied smoothly, wiping his mouth with a linen napkin. ""However, with the heat coming from the Eastern syndicates, your presence ensures absolute obedience. The men need to see their leader’s face. Your father always showed his face on the big runs. It inspires loyalty.""
My father showed his face, and you shot him in the back, Dante thought, keeping his pulse utterly steady. Aloud, he simply nodded. ""You are wise as always, Marcus. What would I do without your guidance?""
Isabella reached across the table, her slender fingers curling over Dante’s wrist. Her touch was warm, but to Dante, it felt like the cold coil of a viper. ""Be careful tomorrow night, Dante. I get so terrified whenever you go out into the field. Come back to me in one piece.""
""I always come home, Isabella,"" Dante replied, looking deeply into her dark eyes until she was forced to look away. ""Nothing in this world can keep me from this house.""
Later that night, Dante stood in his dressing room, suiting up in lightweight Kevlar underneath his black wool coat. Luca walked in through the hidden wardrobe door holding an encrypted radio receiver.
""Federal agents have taken up observation posts around the Calumet docks,"" Luca whispered. ""Marcus’s personal hit squad—twelve ex-mercenaries led by his nephew Carlo—are currently staging at an abandoned warehouse two miles south of the port. The moment the feds move in on the convoy, Carlo’s team plans to ambush the chaos, eliminate any survivors, and ensure neither you nor the evidence makes it out alive.""
""And the convoy trucks?"" Dante asked, adjusting his diamond-encrusted cufflinks.
""Loaded with industrial scrap metal and three tons of dry ice,"" Luca smirked. ""There isn't a single illegal diamond within fifty miles of that port. The drivers are professional stunt contractors hired through a dummy shell company in Nevada. They know to abandon the vehicles the second the sirens flare.""
""Flawless,"" Dante said. He checked his customized Sig Sauer, chambering a round before sliding it into his leather holster. ""Now, what about our audience behind the mirror?""
May you like
""The feed is routed,"" Luca answered. ""We installed high-output tear gas canisters into the ventilation ducts feeding that observation hollow. When the time comes, they won't even be able to breathe, let alone pull a trigger.""
""No tear gas yet,"" Dante instructed, checking his reflection in the full-length mirror of his bedroom—a real mirror this time, showing the cold, lethal predator he had truly become. ""I want Marcus and his daughter sitting comfortably in that hidden room, watching the monitors, completely convinced that their twenty-year ambition is finally being realized. I want them to celebrate their victory before I show them their graves.""
