Chapter 5 - The Glass Shatters

Ethan's face turned the color of chalk. His fingers scrambled frantically over his phone screen, trying to reload his encrypted banking application. ""That's impossible! She's bluffing, Richard! The Cayman accounts are protected by multi-signature protocols! Only I have the security clearance!""
I took three deliberate steps toward him, stopping just beyond his reach. The cold disdain in my eyes was enough to make the former football star shrink back against his luggage. ""You think you had security clearance, Ethan? You couldn't even remember your own four-digit PIN without having me write it on a sticky note under your keyboard. Who do you think built those multi-signature protocols? Who do you think maintained the shadow database?""
""You... you little bitch,"" Victoria snarled, lunging forward with her manicured nails bared. ""You're a secretary! You're nothing! You fetched my lattes and took my dry cleaning! You have no right to touch our family's money!""
Before Victoria could even get close to me, Marco stepped into her path like an iron pillar. He didn't even raise a hand; he merely stood there, his cold, dead-eyed glare freezing Victoria in her tracks. She whimpered, stumbling backward into her father's arms.
""Touch her,"" Lorenzo said, his voice dropping into a deadly, razor-edged whisper that silenced the entire hangar, ""and you leave this hangar in four separate crates. Do you understand me, little girl?""
Victoria began to sob uncontrollably, the spoiled, untouchable heiress crumbling into a pathetic wreck in a matter of seconds.
""Check your phone, Ethan,"" I said calmly, crossing my arms over my cashmere coat. ""Look at the master ledger.""
Ethan’s hands shook so badly he almost dropped the device. He stared at the glowing screen. His eyes widened in absolute, paralyzing terror. ""Zero... it says zero balance across all twelve sub-accounts. How... where did the sixty million go?!""
""Twenty million was transferred directly to Mr. Moretti to settle the outstanding debt you tried to pin on my life,"" I announced, savoring every single syllable as it left my lips. ""Twenty million was transferred into an offshore trust fund to compensate the real brain behind Caldwell Holdings. And the last twenty million?"" I glanced at my watch. ""It's currently sitting in your domestic holding account, triggering forty-seven distinct federal compliance violations.""
Richard gasped, clutching his chest as if he were having a coronary. ""Federal violations?! What did you do?!""
""I reported your tax evasion,"" I said plainly. ""The exact same tax evasion you asked me to cover up in your third-quarter earnings report. You signed those filings, Richard. Ethan co-signed them. I just removed the encrypted masking software that was hiding the shell corporations from the IRS.""
As if on cue, the distant wail of federal sirens cut through the roar of the blizzard outside. Flashing red and blue lights reflected against the hangar's frosted glass windows, multiplying into a blinding kaleidoscope of approaching law enforcement.
""Federal marshals,"" Lorenzo noted smoothly, checking the diamond watch on his wrist. ""They make excellent time, even in four inches of snow. It seems your flight to Grand Cayman has been permanently canceled, Richard.""
""Anna! Please!"" Richard dropped to his knees on the freezing concrete, tears streaming down his wrinkled face, ruining the illusion of corporate majesty he had worn like armor for decades. ""We gave you a job! We gave you a chance when no one else would hire you! You can't let them take everything! I'll make you CEO! I'll give you fifty percent of the company!""
""Caldwell Holdings will be in federal receivership by noon tomorrow, Richard,"" I replied, looking down at him with neither pity nor malice—just absolute, chilling closure. ""You didn't give me a chance. You stole twelve years of my life, you took credit for every single success I engineered, and when the bill came due, you sent me to a man you believed would murder me without a second thought.""
May you like
I turned my back on the three of them, walking slowly toward Lorenzo’s waiting Escalade.
""You sent the quiet secretary, Richard,"" Lorenzo said, leaning down to whisper into Caldwell’s ear before stepping away. ""You just forgot to check if she was holding the gun.""
