Chapter 1 - The Lion’s Den

The click of the disconnected call hung heavy in the opulent silence of the library. Lorenzo Moretti did not hand the phone back to Marco; he placed it precisely on the polished rosewood desk, never taking his amber-flecked eyes off me. The fire crackled against the cold draft rattling the high arched windows, casting sharp, dancing shadows over the sharp angles of his jaw. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird, but I forced my chin up, refusing to break eye contact. In my twelve years at Caldwell Holdings, I had survived boardroom sharks who smiled while stealing my work. I was not going to cower before a predator who didn't even bother to hide his teeth.
""You look remarkably steady for a woman whose employer just threw her to the wolves,"" Lorenzo murmured, his voice a low, gravelly vibration that seemed to reverberate straight through the floorboards. He took two slow, measured steps toward me, closing the distance until I could catch the scent of his cologne—rich Italian leather, bitter cedar, and the clean chill of a Boston blizzard. He pulled out one of the heavy velvet armchairs and gestured toward it with a single flick of his fingers. ""Sit, Anna.""
I didn't move. ""I don't recall wolves asking for restructuring models, Mr. Moretti. You said you wanted the truth. Does the truth require me to be comfortable?""
A faint, dangerous smirk touched the corner of his lips—the first sign of genuine amusement I had seen on his severe face. ""Comfort is a luxury for the innocent, and neither of us qualifies. But pride won't keep your legs from shaking. Sit before you fall.""
Biting the inside of my cheek, I sank into the chair, gripping the armrests to disguise the slight tremble in my fingers. He didn't take the seat opposite me; instead, he rounded the desk, leaning his tall, formidable frame against its edge. He picked up the heavy sheaf of my handwritten notes, his long, scarred fingers turning each page with a reverence that stunned me. For over a decade, Richard Caldwell and Ethan Price had flipped through those very pages like disposable takeout menus, casually signing their names at the bottom before heading out to celebratory four-martini lunches.
""For eight months, my analysts have been trying to breach the defensive firewalls surrounding Caldwell's shell companies,"" Lorenzo said, his gaze fixed on my neat, cursive margin notes. ""Every algorithmic trap I laid was anticipated. Every supply chain squeeze was neutralized forty-eight hours before impact. I thought Richard had hired an elite quantitative firm out of Geneva or a rogue operative from the Treasury Department. It was driving my top men insane."" He lifted his eyes, pinning me with an intensity that burned. ""And all along, it was a ghost sitting in a cubicle outside the corner office.""
""They paid me forty-eight thousand dollars a year,"" I said, the words slipping out with a bitter, razor-sharp edge I couldn't swallow back. ""While Ethan Price collected a two-million-dollar performance bonus off my algorithm last November. When I asked for a cost-of-living raise to help pay for my mother's hospice care, Richard told me I should be grateful to have a front-row seat to greatness.""
Lorenzo’s expression darkened, the amused spark vanishing into something chillingly lethal. ""Ingratitude is a sin, Anna. But stupidity in the presence of genius is fatal. Did you know what they were planning tonight?""
""They wanted you to kill me,"" I answered without hesitation, the cold reality settling like lead in my stomach. ""Or at least lock me in a basement until the morning. Richard knows the twenty million dollar debt is due at midnight. He thought sending me would buy him a twelve-hour delay—just enough time for him and Victoria to board their private charter to Grand Cayman and liquidate the offshore escrows.""
Lorenzo didn't blink. He just tapped the desk once. Marco stepped forward from the shadows, his expression grim. ""The flight manifest at Logan Airport, Marco. Confirm it.""

Marco tapped his phone screen, listening for less than five seconds before hanging up. ""Caldwell's Gulfstream is scheduled for wheels-up at 1:15 AM, Boss. Three passengers listed: Richard, his daughter, and Price.""
Lorenzo turned back to me, his dark eyes ablaze with cold calculation. ""You gave them the keys to your brilliance, and they left you here as collateral for their execution. Tell me, Anna Foster... what do you think is a fair price for betrayal?""
