Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Ghost

The clock on the library wall chimed 12:00 midnight. The resonance of the twelfth chime faded into the rhythmic, furious clatter of my keystrokes. Marco had wheeled in an industrial-grade encrypted laptop, tethered directly to the Moretti family's private, military-grade satellite network. The interface glowed icy blue against my thick glasses, illuminating the rapid cascades of alphanumeric code racing down the dual screens.

Lorenzo stood directly behind my right shoulder, an unlit cigar held casually between his fingers, watching every string of syntax I typed. He was not a coder, but he understood money, power, and logistics with the precision of a chess grandmaster. Every time I bypassed an authentication wall that Caldwell had paid millions to establish, a subtle, admiring hum rumbled in his chest.

""Three layers of Swiss proxy encryption,"" I muttered, my fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard without a single pause. ""Ethan thought using an offshore mirror server would hide the transaction logs. He forgot that every mirror needs a silver backing to reflect.""

""Can you break the vault before their plane takes off?"" Lorenzo asked quietly.

""I'm not breaking it, Mr. Moretti. I'm using the master maintenance backdoor I wrote three months ago. The system thinks I'm just running a scheduled security patch."" I hit the enter key with a sharp, definitive click.

A green progress bar flashed on the center screen: ESCROW DIVERSION INITIALIZED: $60,000,000.00 USD.

""Split destination,"" I directed aloud, splitting the window. ""Twenty million to Moretti Holdings Ltd, Cayman branch account ending in 4491. Confirm routing, Marco.""

""Confirmed,"" Marco said, his voice laced with uncharacteristic awe as he tracked the ledger on his tablet. ""Funds cleared. The debt is settled, Boss. Paid in full.""

""Now the second tranche,"" Lorenzo instructed, his voice dropping into that dark, velvety register that made my pulse jump. ""Where is your share going, Anna?""

""An independent trust registered under my mother's maiden name, managed through your Zurich affiliate,"" I said, rapidly keying in the newly created account numbers Lorenzo's legal team had just provisioned for me ten minutes prior. ""Completely untraceable to Anna Foster. Clean, untainted, and locked behind biometric security.""

Enter.

TRANSFER COMPLETE: $20,000,000.00 USD.

Just like that, with twenty lines of code and the pressing of a key, the girl who had spent the last decade surviving on instant ramen and clipping store coupons to buy her mother's insulin was independently wealthy. A heavy, suffocating weight seemed to lift from my chest, but the job wasn't finished. There was still twenty million left—and the trap had to snap shut.

""Now for the coup de grâce,"" I said, a genuine smile finally gracing my face. I opened Caldwell Holdings' central ledger and rerouted the remaining funds into their domestic payroll holding account, intentionally flagging the transfer under an obsolete IRS corporate tax loophole that hadn't been legal since 2018.

The screen flashed red: SYSTEM ALERT: TRANSACTION FLAGGED FOR REGULATORY REVIEW BY INTERNAL AUDIT.

""At precisely 6:00 AM, the regional Treasury department will receive an automated discrepancy alert,"" I explained, closing the laptop with a satisfying snap. ""By 7:30 AM, federal marshals will be serving a freeze order on all Caldwell corporate assets. When Richard and Ethan step off their private jet in the Caribbean, their emergency offshore accounts will show a zero balance, and their domestic lines of credit will be completely dead.""

Lorenzo let out a slow breath, stepping around the chair to face me. He looked at me not as a billionaire mobster looking at a disposable subordinate, but as an equal. The sheer power radiating from him was intoxicating, but for the first time in my life, I didn't feel small in the presence of power. I had wielded it myself tonight.

""Twelve years,"" Lorenzo said softly, resting one hand on the edge of the desk beside me. ""Twelve years you sat in their lobby, taking their coffee orders and enduring their insults. Why didn't you do this five years ago?""

""Because my mother was still in the hospital,"" I answered, the truth raw and unvarnished. ""Richard held her specialized healthcare plan over my head like a guillotine. He knew that if I quit, her coverage would lapse, and the out-of-pocket costs would have bankrupted us in a month. She passed away three weeks ago, Mr. Moretti. The moment I buried her, their leverage died with her.""

May you like

Lorenzo’s dark eyes softened with an understanding that caught me off guard. There was no pity in his gaze—only the deep, resonant respect of a survivor who recognized the scars of another.

""She raised a warrior,"" Lorenzo said quietly. ""And Richard Caldwell just signed his own death warrant by handing you to me.""
