Chapter 4 - The Runway Ambush

At 1:05 AM, the blizzard over Boston intensified into a whiteout, screaming winds whipping snow against the runway lights of Logan International Airport's private terminal. Inside the heated VIP hangar, Richard Caldwell paced back and forth, a crystal glass of bourbon shaking slightly in his manicured hand. Beside him, dressed in an extravagant white mink coat, Victoria checked her designer compact mirror, reapplying red lipstick with bored disdain.

""Relax, Dad,"" Victoria sneered, snapping the compact shut. ""The storm is getting worse, but the pilot said we have clearance in ten minutes. Moretti has probably already dumped that pathetic little mouse's body in the harbor. By the time he realizes the twenty million isn't coming from Caldwell Holdings, we'll be sipping daiquiris on our yacht in Grand Cayman.""

Ethan Price sat on leather luggage, a smug, self-satisfied grin plastered across his face as he tapped his luxury wristwatch. ""I told you using Anna was a stroke of genius, Richard. Lorenzo Moretti is an arrogant Sicilian thug. Sending him an plain, stuttering secretary was the ultimate insult. He was so busy dealing with her that he didn't even notice our offshore transfers clearing the system.""

""You're sure the sixty million cleared, Ethan?"" Richard asked, wiping cold sweat from his forehead with a silk handkerchief. ""If Moretti tracks that money—""

""The money is safe in the Cayman trust, Richard,"" Ethan laughed arrogantly, pulling up his banking app on his smartphone. ""I set up the routing myself. Anna did all the coding grunt work, but I held the master passwords. The girl was an idiot. She worshipped the ground I walked on. She probably apologized to Moretti before he put a bullet in her.""

Victoria laughed, a sharp, grating sound that echoed off the cold aluminum hangar walls. ""I still can't believe she wore that hideous gray coat every single day for four years. Good riddance. She was an eyesore in our executive suite anyway.""

Suddenly, the heavy metal doors of the private hangar creaked open. The whistling wind roared inside, driving a swirl of powdery snow across the polished concrete floor. Three massive black Cadillac Escalades rolled silently into the hangar, forming a blockade directly in front of Caldwell's sleek private jet.

Richard froze, the bourbon glass slipping from his fingers and shattering across the floor. ""What is this? Who authorized those vehicles onto the tarmac?""

The doors of the center Escalade opened. Two armed men in heavy wool overcoats stepped out, followed by Lorenzo Moretti. But it wasn't Lorenzo who made Richard’s breath catch in his throat.

Stepping out into the harsh fluorescent lights of the hangar, right beside the most feared man in New England, was me.

I wasn't wearing the drab, oversized gray coat or the thick, unflattering glasses. Lorenzo's staff had provided an impeccably tailored black cashmere trench coat, belted tightly at my waist, and sleek designer boots that clicked with cold authority against the concrete. My dark hair was swept up in an elegant, severe twist, highlighting high cheekbones and clear, resolute eyes.

Victoria gasped, taking an instinctive step backward. ""Anna?! What... what is she doing here?!""

Ethan sprang to his feet, his smug grin melting into a pale mask of horror. ""Mr. Moretti! There must be some mistake! We... we sent her to explain the repayment terms!""

Lorenzo walked forward slowly, his hands resting casually inside his coat pockets. The absolute aura of lethal authority radiating from him made the two Caldwell bodyguards drop their heads, backing away toward the perimeter without a word.

""There is no mistake, Ethan,"" Lorenzo’s voice echoed like thunder across the hangar. ""Anna explained everything. In fact, she explained things you never even had the brains to comprehend.""

Richard began to tremble violently, looking from Lorenzo to me in sheer disbelief. ""Anna... Anna, sweetheart, what did you tell him? Tell him we're partners! Tell him Caldwell Holdings will wire his money first thing in the morning!""

""Caldwell Holdings doesn't have your money anymore, Richard,"" I said, my voice clear, steady, and devoid of the meekness they had spent twelve years exploiting. ""And don't ever call me sweetheart again.""
