Chapter 2 - The Counter-Strike

""I don't believe in revenge,"" I replied, meeting Lorenzo's chilling gaze head-on. ""Revenge is an emotional reaction that clouds logical strategy. I believe in total, systematic audit. I believe in reclaiming what was stolen, with compounding interest.""

Lorenzo’s lips curved into a slow, appreciative smile that gave me goosebumps. ""A woman after my own heart. Marco, pour her a drink. Something strong.""

Before I could protest, Marco set a crystal tumbler of amber scotch on the side table beside my chair. The liquid burned like liquid fire on the way down, but it cut through the freezing numbness that had settled in my veins since Richard pushed me out the door into the snow. The warmth spread outward, steadying my hands and clearing the fog of adrenaline from my mind.

""Richard thinks he has sixty million dollars waiting for him in the Cayman trust,"" I began, opening the front compartment of my worn leather portfolio and pulling out a slim, encrypted flash drive on a cheap plastic keychain. ""He believes that because Ethan Price handles the master keys. But Ethan couldn't code his way out of a paper bag. Every time Ethan had to authorize a transaction, he brought me the laptop, claimed his password manager was glitching, and made me enter the dual-authentication protocols.""

Lorenzo stepped off the desk, his presence looming large and magnetic as he leaned over the back of my chair, looking down at the drive. ""You have the root access.""

""Better than that,"" I said, a rare, venomous smirk touching my lips. ""I built the system architecture. When I realized three weeks ago that Ethan was systematically falsifying payroll records and draining the employee pension fund to cover their bad margin calls, I added a dead-man trigger. If my employee badge wasn't scanned into the Caldwell tower network by midnight tonight, the entire escrow was designed to reroute to a cold-storage holding account under a blind escrow identifier.""

Lorenzo let out a low, dark chuckle that sent shivers racing down my spine. ""You didn't come here tonight to beg for your life, did you, little secretary? You came here looking for an executioner who could handle the heavy lifting.""

""I came here because Richard Caldwell owes you twenty million dollars,"" I retorted, spinning the flash drive between my fingers. ""And I happen to know where sixty million is currently floating in limbo. But I can't move that money into a verified clearinghouse without institutional infrastructure that Richard can't touch. You have that infrastructure. You own three private boutique banks registered in Zurich and Luxembourg.""

Lorenzo stared at me, his eyes gleaming with sheer fascination. ""You did your homework on me.""

""I do my homework on everyone who has the power to ruin my life,"" I answered plainly. ""Here is my proposition, Mr. Moretti: You cancel the twenty-million-dollar debt that Richard dumped on my shoulders. You provide me safe haven and complete legal immunity. In exchange, I transfer twenty million directly into your offshore accounts tonight, before Richard's jet even reaches cruising altitude. Then, I take twenty million for myself—back pay for twelve years of stolen sweat and stolen code.""

Marco cleared his throat from the corner, his eyebrows raised in pure shock. No one spoke to Lorenzo Moretti like that. No one dictated terms to the head of the New England syndicate. I held my breath, wondering if I had pushed my luck beyond the cliff's edge.

Lorenzo leaned down until his face was inches from mine. His warm breath grazed my cheek, smelling of spiced tobacco. ""And the remaining twenty million, Anna? What happens to that?""

""We leave it in the Caldwell Holdings operating account,"" I said softly, my voice dripping with cold satisfaction. ""Just enough to trigger an automatic federal tax audit at 8:00 AM tomorrow morning, without enough liquidity to cover their payroll or their secured bond payments. By noon, the SEC will seize the building. Richard and Victoria will land in the Caymans to find their bank cards declined, their names on an Interpol red notice, and their golden parachutes shredded to pieces.""

For five agonizing seconds, Lorenzo said nothing. Then, his hand came up, his warm, calloused fingers gently tucking a stray strand of hair behind my ear. The touch was startlingly tender for a man who ordered executions with a nod.

""Marco,"" Lorenzo commanded, never looking away from my eyes. ""Bring her a terminal and plug into our private satellite uplink. Miss Foster is running the board tonight.""
