Chapter 9 - Ashes And Rebirth

Three months later, the cold New England winter had finally surrendered to the gentle, blooming warmth of spring.

The demolition notices along Harrow Street had been torn down. In their place stood a large, beautifully painted sign in deep green and gold:

Construction crews were busy working on the old brownstones, but they weren't tearing them down. They were replacing the old roofs, installing modern double-paned windows, and fitting the historic brick structures with state-of-the-art heating systems. The elderly tenants on the second floor sat on their freshly painted porches, waving down at the workers who greeted them by name.

Across the street, where the boarded-up laundromat once stood, an open-air florist shop had opened its doors. Buckets of freshly cut tulips, roses, and brilliant yellow daisies lined the sidewalk, soaking in the morning sunshine.

Elena Vance stood behind the wooden counter, arranging a bouquet of white lilies. She wore a simple linen dress and an apron, but the platinum diamond band on her left finger remained firmly in place. Her nursing license had been officially restored with an executive apology from the state medical board, but for now, she preferred the clean scent of soil and petals over hospital disinfectants.

A sleek black Mercedes pulled up quietly to the curb. There was no armored security escort this time; just the deep, steady hum of a luxury engine.

The passenger door opened, and Dante stepped out. He was dressed in a casual charcoal sweater and dark trousers, his dark hair ruffled slightly by the spring breeze. He looked younger, the harsh lines of tension around his jaw completely smoothed away.

""Business looks good, Mrs. Moretti,"" Dante said as he walked up to the counter, leaning against the timber with an easy, warm smile that had become frequent over the past weeks.

""We sold out of daffodils before ten o'clock,"" Elena replied, wiping her hands on her apron, her cheeks flushing with a warmth that had nothing to do with the sun. ""And Sophie is currently demanding a promotion to head of regional sales.""

Dante chuckled, a deep, rich sound that made Elena's heart flutter. ""She’s already negotiating better than half the board members at my logistics company.""

Sophie came running out from the back garden, her hands covered in damp earth and her hair tied in two cheerful pigtails. ""Dante! Look! The daisies are growing!""

Dante caught the little girl effortlessly as she jumped into his arms, lifting her high into the air. Sophie wrapped her arms around his neck, giggling as his stubble tickled her cheek.

""They're growing because you have the best green thumb in Boston,"" Dante praised her, setting her gently back down on the grass.

""Aunt Elena said you have to pay the rent for the parking space,"" Sophie informed him with utter seriousness, pointing a muddy finger at the Mercedes.

Dante looked over at Elena, his dark eyes brimming with unspoken affection and a quiet, profound tenderness. ""Is that so? What is the going rate these days?""
