Chapter 7 - The City Hall Ambush

At 11:30 AM, the marble rotunda of Boston City Hall was a sea of flashing camera lights, shouting reporters, and heavily armed state troopers.
Councilman Vincent Moretti stood behind a mahogany podium decorated with the seal of the city. He looked immaculate—a silver-haired politician with an expensive smile, tailored blue suit, and an American flag pin pinned to his lapel.
""My fellow citizens,"" Vincent spoke into the battery of microphones, dabbling an emotional tear from his eye with a white linen handkerchief. ""It pains my heart to stand before you today. The Moretti name has long stood for community and philanthropy in Boston. But a rogue element within my own family—my cousin, Dante Moretti—has crossed an unforgivable line. Yesterday afternoon, he brazenly abducted six-year-old Sophie Vance from her neighborhood, seeking to coerce her guardian into surrendering the deed to Harrow Street.""
A murmur of righteous anger rolled through the press pool.
""I have personally petitioned the probate court for an emergency conservatorship order,"" Vincent continued smoothly, holding up a blue legal folder. ""Within the hour, the Department of Children and Families will take custody of little Sophie's estate, ensuring that her family's land is preserved for the community's future redevelopment!""
""Is that so, Councilman?""
A booming voice cut through the cavernous rotunda like an artillery shell.
The massive bronze double doors of City Hall swung open with a resounding bang. Every television camera spun around in unison.
Walking down the grand marble staircase was Dante Moretti. He wore a midnight-blue three-piece suit, an immaculate white shirt, and an aura of supreme, unshakeable authority. Beside him walked Elena Vance, radiant in a tailored cream coat, her chin held high and her eyes blazing like polished emeralds.
Between them, holding both their hands, was little Sophie. The girl wore a brand-new wool coat the color of honey, shiny black shoes, and carried a fresh, blooming bouquet of yellow daisies.
""Hold your fire!"" a police captain shouted as five state troopers instinctively drew their service weapons.
""Put those toys away, Captain,"" Dante said calmly, continuing down the stairs without pausing for a single second. ""You don't draw weapons on a citizen reporting for a public press conference.""
Vincent's face drained of all color. His knuckles turned white against the wooden edges of the podium. ""Dante... You have the audacity to show your face here? Officers, arrest him! He has kidnapped that child!""
""Arrest me for what, Vincent?"" Dante asked, stepping onto the rotunda floor. The crowd of journalists parted like the Red Sea before him. ""Walking into a public building with my legal wife and our legally adopted ward?""
A collective gasp swept through the reporters. Camera shutters clicked in a frantic, deafening rhythm.
Elena stepped up to the microphones, pushing Vincent aside with a single, contemptuous sweep of her arm. ""My name is Elena Vance. I am the maternal aunt of Sophie Vance, and as of 8:00 AM this morning, I am Mrs. Dante Moretti.""
May you like
She raised her left hand, revealing a platinum band encrusted with three flawless diamonds that caught the television lights with blinding brilliance.
""My niece was never kidnapped,"" Elena declared into the microphones, her voice clear, powerful, and utterly devoid of fear. ""She was rescued from an armed assassination attempt orchestrated by none other than Councilman Vincent Moretti!""
