Chapter 2 - The Ghost On The Doorstep

The front door of apartment 3B rattled under three distinct, deliberate knocks. In Dorchester, knocks that sounded so calm were always the ones that carried the most danger. The cheap deadbolt clicked open beneath Elena Vance’s white-knuckled grip, her kitchen knife hidden behind her thigh.

""Sophie, go into the bedroom right now and lock the latch,"" Elena commanded in a sharp, quiet whisper.

The six-year-old scrambled under the dining table instead, clutching a worn teddy bear whose glass eye was missing. Elena swung the door open by three inches, keeping the security chain fastened across the rusted brass track.

A broad-shouldered silhouette swallowed all the dim hallway light. Overcoat made of Italian cashmere, a silk scarf knotted with surgical precision, and eyes darker than midnight coal. Dante Moretti looked down at her through the gap, completely unfazed by the dim apartment or the stale odor of boiled soup and floor wax.

""You have five seconds to leave before I scream for the whole building,"" Elena hissed, her heart slamming against her ribs like a trapped bird. ""We don't take charity, and we certainly don't take mafia blood money.""

Dante didn't flinch. He produced the battered bunch of yellow daisies from beneath his coat and held them upright, exactly as Sophie had held them twenty minutes ago. ""Your niece forgot her change. And I do not like leaving accounts open.""

""You monster,"" Elena gasped, tears of raw fury burning behind her eyelids. ""You know exactly who I am. You know what you did to us two years ago! St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital. The contaminated batch of painkillers your shell company smuggled in through the harbor. You framed me for the dosage logs! I lost my license, my career, everything! My sister died in a hospice ward because I couldn’t afford her chemotherapy anymore!""

Dante tilted his head, his chiseled jaw tightening into solid marble. He did not sound angry; he sounded ice-cold and profoundly observant. ""Miss Vance, if I wanted a nurse silenced, she would not be living quietly on Harrow Street with an intact throat. If I had manufactured bad medicine, the executives would be floating in Boston Harbor, not drinking gin at the country club.""

""Do not lie to me!"" she yelled, her hand trembling around the hilt of the kitchen knife.

""Someone signed my name to that manifest,"" Dante said, his voice dropping into a register that made the loose floorboards hum. ""Someone who operates out of the East Boston docks using my grandfather's old seal. I only learned of it forty-eight hours ago when my internal audits caught an irregular tax trail leading directly to your sister’s medical file.""

Elena froze, her hand hesitating on the chain. ""What did you say?""

""I said someone murdered your sister while making you take the fall, using my name as their shield,"" Dante said evenly. ""And whoever they are, they followed Sophie from the market square thirty minutes ago. If you look out your living room window right now, you will see a silver sedan parked beside the hydrant. There are two men inside with suppressed submachine guns.""

Elena’s gaze snapped toward the cracked window. A cold dread washed through her veins as she saw the dark silhouettes sitting idling across the street.

May you like

""May I come inside?"" Dante asked quietly. ""Or would you prefer to test their patience?""

With shaking fingers, Elena slid the metal chain from the track and pulled the door wide open.
