Chapter 3 - The Broken Ledger

The apartment smelled of lemon cleaner and the bitter tang of cheap herbal tea. Dante stepped inside, his polished oxfords making no sound against the worn linoleum floor. Despite his tailored frame, he filled the small living room until the walls seemed to bend inward.
Sophie peered out from behind the sofa cushion, her huge eyes darting between the towering stranger and her trembling aunt. ""Mister, you kept the flowers.""
""I did,"" Dante said, setting the sad bouquet carefully onto the laminate counter as if it were a priceless heirloom. He turned to Elena. ""Shut the blinds. Keep the center lamp off. Marco is downstairs in the alley, but we don't want them getting reckless before we understand what they are after.""
Elena dropped the kitchen knife onto the counter with a hollow clatter. Her hands were shaking so hard she had to grip her elbows to steady herself. ""If you didn't falsify the records at St. Jude’s, then who did? The testimony came from the chief medical director himself. Dr. Callahan claimed your syndicate delivered the crates directly to the underground pharmacy.""
""Callahan owes three million dollars to a loan shark network operating out of Revere,"" Dante replied without hesitation. ""He was bankrupt, desperate, and terrified. But he didn't run to me. He ran to my estranged cousin, Vincent.""
The name hung in the cold room like poison smoke. Elena took a step back, her back hitting the edge of the dining table. ""Vincent Moretti? The councilman?""
""The councilman who smiles on morning television and donates playgrounds to church charities,"" Dante said, a bitter edge cutting through his voice. ""Vincent wants Harrow Street leveled. He purchased the surrounding three blocks through six separate dummy corporations. Your apartment complex is the only building whose tenants refused to sell out. Your sister owned the master deed to this entire row of homes, didn't she?""
Elena's breath caught in her throat. Her sister, Clara, had inherited the old brick tenement from their grandfather, a retired dockworker who believed that families should always have a permanent roof over their heads. Clara had fought tooth and nail to keep the rents low, defying every aggressive buyout offer that slipped through the mail slot.
""Clara was stubborn,"" Elena whispered, tears blurring her vision. ""Even when she was coughing up blood, she refused to sign the transfer papers. She told them that the elderly widows on the second floor would freeze to death if an investment firm took over.""
""And so Vincent decided to eliminate her through attrition,"" Dante concluded, his eyes dark with dangerous clarity. ""First, destroy your reputation so you could not work or take out a legal loan to pay for her specialty medications. Second, cut off the supply of safe medication to accelerate her decline. When she died, the deed was supposed to transfer to the state under probate liens. But it didn't, did it?""
""No,"" Elena said, her voice barely a whisper. She looked toward Sophie, who was quietly brushing the teddy bear's ears. ""Clara placed the master deed into a blind trust. The sole beneficiary is Sophie. And until Sophie turns eighteen, the trust can only be liquidated by her legal guardian.""

Dante looked over at the little girl sitting on the floor. For the first time, a cold, predatory anger flared in the depths of his dark eyes. ""Which means as long as you and Sophie are breathing, Vincent cannot lay a single claw on Harrow Street.""
Before Elena could respond, a sharp, metallic pop echoed from the street below, followed immediately by the shattering of safety glass in the dark alleyway.
