Chapter 10 - A Garden For Tomorrow

Elena smiled, leaning over the counter until her face was only inches from Dante's. ""Two dollars. Exact change only.""

Dante reached into his pocket and pulled out two crisp, unwrinkled one-dollar bills. He placed them carefully on the wooden counter, sliding them toward her. Then, he reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out an envelope bearing the official seal of the state probate and family court.

Elena looked down at the envelope. Her heart skipped a beat. ""Is that...?""

""The final decree,"" Dante said softly. ""The one-year contract we signed. The court has approved the paperwork for the dissolution of the paper marriage, as agreed.""

The air between them suddenly grew still. Sophie had run back toward the garden to chase a butterfly, leaving the two of them standing in the quiet morning light.

Elena stared at the envelope. Three months ago, this document had been her ticket to freedom. It was supposed to be the end of an agonizing nightmare—the moment she took Sophie and walked away from the shadow of the Moretti name forever.

Slowly, Elena picked up the envelope. She didn't open it. Instead, she held it over the ceramic rubbish bin beneath the counter.

""Elena?"" Dante’s voice was barely a whisper. For the first time since she had met him, the legendary mafia kingpin looked uncertain, almost vulnerable.

""You said it was a business arrangement,"" Elena said softly, looking up into his dark, searching eyes. ""You said I could take a settlement and leave anytime.""

""I did,"" Dante admitted, his jaw tightening slightly. ""Those were the terms. You and Sophie deserve a normal, peaceful life without my world touching you.""

Elena gripped the envelope with both hands and tore it cleanly in half. Then she tore it again, letting the white paper scraps flutter harmlessly into the trash bin.

Dante froze, his eyes widening in complete astonishment. ""Elena... what are you doing?""

Elena stepped out from behind the wooden counter. She closed the distance between them, reaching up to gently lay her hand against his warm, chiseled cheek.

""Two years ago, a man who shared your name took everything from me,"" she whispered, her voice filled with emotion. ""He took my sister, my career, and my peace of mind. But you... you gave me back my life. You protected my niece when the entire world turned away. You built Clara's dream with your own hands.""

She looked down at the platinum ring on her finger, then met his gaze with unshakeable certainty.

""I don't want a contract, Dante. And I certainly don't want a fake marriage.""

Dante stared at her, the disbelief in his expression slowly melting into an overwhelming wave of pure relief and fierce devotion. He wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her close against his chest until she could feel the steady, thunderous beat of his heart.

""You are staying?"" he asked, his voice thick with emotion.

""Only if you promise to buy flowers from this shop every single morning for the rest of your life,"" she whispered, a radiant smile illuminating her face.

""That,"" Dante murmured, leaning down to capture her lips in a tender, passionate kiss that sealed their future under the bright spring sky, ""is the easiest deal I have ever made.""

Sophie ran back from the garden, holding up a giant, blooming yellow daisy. She saw Dante holding Elena tight, both of them laughing into the warm breeze.

""Hey!"" Sophie shouted happily, waving the flower between them. ""I told you the two-dollar flower would make you happy!""

Dante looked over at the little girl, sweeping her up into their embrace with one strong arm while keeping Elena locked securely against his side. Around them, the street was alive with children playing, neighbors talking, and flowers blooming in every corner of the sidewalk. The shadow of violence had broken, replaced forever by the light of a family born from love, courage, and a two-dollar daisy."
