Chapter 9 - The Shadows Cleared

Three months later, on a crisp, sunlit Saturday afternoon in early spring, the cathedral bells rang out across the city.
The wedding was intimate, private, and filled with genuine joy. There were no armed guards standing visible guard at the church doors; there were no bulletproof limousines idling with darkened windows. For the first time in his adult life, Valente Carmine walked in the daylight without checking the rooftops for snipers.
Clara stood as the maid of honor, radiant in a blush-pink gown, weeping happy tears as she adjusted her sister’s lace train. Leo, standing proud as the best man in a crisp tailored tuxedo, smiled warmly, looking more like an older brother than an enforcer.
When Ruby walked down the aisle on the arm of the elderly gentleman from table six—whom Ruby and Valente had remained close friends with ever since that fateful night—the entire cathedral held its breath.
Her gown was simple, timeless ivory silk, flowing behind her like water. But it was her face that captivated everyone—radiant, peaceful, and shining with an inner strength that had saved a life and redeemed a soul.
Valente stood at the altar, his eyes locked onto hers from the second the heavy oak doors swung open. When her hand was placed in his, his fingers closed around hers with the same protective, gentle warmth she had known since the night on the rain-slicked sidewalk.
""You look breathtaking, Bennett,"" he whispered, a tear escaping his eye that he didn't bother to wipe away.
""You don't clean up too bad yourself, Carmine,"" she whispered back, her smile lighting up the grand sanctuary.

Their vows were simple, spoken from the depths of their shared trials. They promised to protect each other, to stand together through fire and storm, and to build a life founded not on fear or survival, but on love, honor, and grace.
When the priest pronounced them husband and wife, Valente took Ruby into his arms, kissing her before the altar as the congregation erupted into joyful applause. Clara cheered, Leo clapped firmly, and outside, the cathedral bells rang out a joyful song of renewal and peace across the entire city.
