Chapter 4 - The Price of Loyalty

Dawn broke over the city in muted shades of gray and lavender.
Inside the Carmine estate—a sprawling, fortified mansion outside the city limits protected by private security patrols and high iron gates—the chaos of the night felt like a distant nightmare. Ruby had been given dry, comfortable clothes, and Clara was already sound asleep in one of the grand guest bedrooms upstairs, exhausted by the night's terror.
Ruby, however, could not sleep. She wandered into the grand library, where floor-to-ceiling shelves held thousands of leather-bound books, and a fire crackled quietly in the stone hearth.
Valente was seated behind a heavy mahogany desk, signing documents while Leo stood quietly beside him, reporting in hushed tones.
""Davis talked,"" Leo reported. ""He gave up three city inspectors and Moretti’s offshore staging accounts. The police commissioner has already issued warrants for Moretti's top lieutenants on treason and racketeering charges. By noon, Moretti’s empire will be cut in half.""
""And Moretti himself?"" Valente asked.
""He went to ground. Somewhere in the eastern hills, likely his private vineyard compound. He knows he lost the city.""
Valente signed the last paper and waved Leo off. ""Get some sleep, Leo. Double the perimeter guards on the east wing. We finish Moretti tomorrow.""
Leo bowed slightly and walked out, nodding respectfully to Ruby as he passed her in the doorway.
""You should be resting, Bennett,"" Valente said without looking up from his desk. ""It’s been a long night for a waitress.""
""I don't think I can ever just be a waitress again,"" Ruby said softly, walking closer to the fire. She rubbed her arms, watching the flames dance. ""Even if Moretti goes to jail, my life is gone. My apartment isn't safe. My job literally exploded. My sister thinks our lives are completely ruined.""
Valente set his pen down. He stood up, walked around the massive desk, and poured two glasses of amber whiskey from a crystal decanter, offering one to her.
Ruby hesitated, then took it. The liquid burned her throat, but it spread a comforting warmth through her chest.
""Your life isn't ruined,"" Valente said gently. ""It is changing. Those are two different things.""
""Easy for you to say,"" she countered, looking at the lavish surroundings. ""You have an army. You have walls, money, power. I had eight hundred dollars in savings and a half-month rent due on Tuesday.""
""And yet, when the bomb was beneath my feet, all my money and power couldn't buy me five extra seconds of life,"" Valente said, his voice dropping into a quiet, intense murmur. ""You bought me those seconds. You traded your safety, your routine, and your peace of mind to warn a stranger who had a reputation for violence.""
""I didn't think about your reputation,"" Ruby admitted, looking directly into his dark, penetrating eyes. ""I just saw a human being about to be murdered. And I couldn't let everyone else in that dining room die for someone else's war.""
Valente stepped closer, close enough that she could smell the clean scent of cedarwood soap and expensive leather on him. ""That is called honor, Ruby. In my world, we pretend honor exists, but it’s usually just greed wrapped in pretty words. You actually possess it.""
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box, setting it gently on the small table between them.
""What is that?"" she asked cautiously.
""A key,"" Valente replied. ""To a home on the coast in Maine. High cliffside, completely private, deeded in your sister's name. It comes with a trust fund large enough to pay Clara’s college tuition, medical expenses, and provide for both of you for fifty years. No strings attached. You leave this afternoon, and you never look back.""
Ruby stared at the velvet box. This was the clean exit. The golden parachute.
""And what happens to you?"" she asked.
""I have a war to conclude,"" Valente said flatly. ""Moretti struck at my life, and he endangered innocent people under my roof. By tonight, his organization will cease to exist.""
Ruby looked up at him, her heart beating fast. ""He's dangerous, Valente. You almost died twice in twelve hours. What if his compound is a trap?""
Valente smiled softly, a look of profound warmth touching his rugged features. ""Are you worried about me, Miss Bennett?""

Before Ruby could answer, a frantic knock sounded at the library door. Leo stepped in, his face pale.
""Boss. We have a breach.""
