Chapter 5 - Shadows at the Gates

The silence of the dawn was shattered by the distant pop of suppressed gunfire near the estate's outer security perimeter.
""Moretti didn't run to the hills,"" Leo said, his voice tight. ""He used the police raid on his docks as a distraction. He gathered every mercenary he had left on payroll and hit our outer gate with two armored trucks. They’re already through the tree line.""
Valente’s transformation was instant. The contemplative, gentle man disappeared, replaced by an iron-willed general of the underworld.
""Lockdown protocol,"" Valente commanded smoothly. ""Seal the safe room on the second floor. Take Miss Bennett and her sister inside immediately.""
""No!"" Ruby grabbed his arm. ""Clara is upstairs, but I'm not hiding in a room while you fight off an invasion because of what I started!""
""You didn't start this, Ruby!"" Valente said, gripping her wrists firmly, his eyes fierce. ""Listen to me. Moretti knows you are here. If his men breach this house, their orders will be to execute you first to send a message. Get upstairs to the safe room. Now!""
He didn't wait for her argument. He pushed her toward Leo, who quickly guided her out into the grand hallway. Alarms were chiming in low, steady pulses throughout the house. Steel shutters were mechanically descending over the floor-to-ceiling windows, turning the sunlit mansion into a fortress.
Ruby ran upstairs into the guest suite, where Clara was already awake, clutching a pillow in terror.
""Ruby! What's happening?!"" Clara cried out as explosions shook the ground beneath them.
""Pack your shoes, Clara! Come on!"" Ruby pulled her sister into the hallway, following Leo toward the reinforced vault at the end of the east corridor.
Outside, the estate sounded like a battlefield. Heavy rifle fire chewed into stone columns. Shouts and engine roars echoed from the driveway. Valente’s loyal guards were fighting fiercely, but Moretti’s men had the advantage of absolute desperation—they knew if they didn't kill Valente Carmine today, none of them would survive the week.
Just as Leo punched the biometric code into the safe room keypad, a concussive blast blew through the eastern stairwell.
Smoke and debris tore through the hall. Leo was thrown against the wall, knocked unconscious by a piece of flying timber.
Through the clearing smoke, three armed men in black tactical gear stepped onto the upper landing. At the center was Marco Moretti himself—a tall, silver-haired man with hollow cheeks and the dead eyes of a shark.
""Well, well,"" Moretti sneered, raising an automatic pistol. ""The little hero waitress and her sister. You cost me twenty million dollars and my entire northern territory, little girl.""
Clara screamed, dropping behind Ruby.
Ruby stood frozen, but her protective instincts overrode every shred of fear in her body. She stepped completely in front of Clara, shielding her with her own frame, staring down the barrel of Moretti’s gun.
""He’s not in the safe room, Moretti,"" Ruby said, keeping her voice as loud and steady as possible, trying to buy even five seconds. ""Valente isn't here. You're too late.""
""I don't care where Valente is,"" Moretti growled, stepping forward, his finger tightening on the trigger. ""Killing you first will hurt him worse than any bullet I could put in his heart.""
""Drop it, Marco.""
The voice didn't come from the hallway. It came from the service balcony above.
Moretti whipped around, but it was already over.
Valente dropped from the upper railing, landing like a panther. In a flash of brutal motion, he disarmed the first guard, used him as a human shield against the second, and fired two precise rounds that dropped both attackers to the floor.
Moretti scrambled backward, firing wildly. One bullet grazed Valente’s side, tearing through his black shirt, but the mafia boss didn't even flinch. He closed the distance in two strides, slammed Moretti against the marble wall, and pressed his gun barrel directly between the rival boss's eyes.
The hallway fell dead silent, save for the crackle of fire and Moretti’s choked gasps.
""You brought war into my home,"" Valente whispered, his voice vibrating with lethal fury. ""You targeted children. You targeted an innocent girl who only wanted to do what was right.""
""Do it, Carmine,"" Moretti choked out, blood dripping from his split lip. ""End it.""
""No,"" Valente said coldly. ""Ending you quickly is a mercy you don't deserve.""
With a swift, crushing blow, Valente knocked Moretti unconscious. The rival boss slumped to the floor, defeated, broken, and powerless.
Valente turned around slowly. His shirt was torn, blood staining his ribs from the bullet graze, but his gaze went instantly to Ruby.
Ruby stood there, trembling, clutching Clara against her chest. When she saw the blood on Valente's side, a gasp escaped her throat, and before she could stop herself, she ran toward him, catching him as his knees buckled slightly from exhaustion.
""You're hit,"" she whispered, her hands pressing against his side, tears finally breaking free.
May you like
Valente looked down at her hands on his chest, then up into her tear-streaked face. In the midst of the smoke and ruin, a genuine, soft smile touched his lips.
""Just a scratch, Bennett,"" he murmured. ""I told you... nobody touches what is under my protection.""
