Chapter 7 - A New Foundation

Six months later.

The intersection where Il Giardino once stood looked entirely different.

The scorched brick and shattered glass were gone. In their place stood a magnificent new building of warm limestone, soaring arched windows, and brass accents that gleamed under the afternoon sun. Above the grand mahogany entrance, elegant gold lettering spelled out the new name: The Bennett Foundation & Culinary Hall.

It wasn't a mafia front. It wasn't an exclusive dining club for corrupt politicians and shadowy syndicate bosses.

It was a community hub and culinary institute, fully funded by a private charitable trust. Upstairs were classrooms providing free vocational training and hospitality certification for underprivileged youths and single mothers. Downstairs was a bustling, world-class bistro where half the profits went directly toward local shelter programs and youth scholarships.

Ruby stood in the center of the bustling dining room, wearing an elegant ivory blazer and tailored trousers. She held a clipboard, reviewing the evening’s guest list for the grand opening gala.

""Ruby! Look at the pastry display!"" Clara called out, running from the kitchen wearing a crisp white chef's apron, her eyes shining with pride. Clara had enrolled in the institute's culinary arts program, thriving under the mentorship of top pastry chefs. She was healthy, happy, and glowing with confidence.

""It looks incredible, Clara,"" Ruby smiled, hugging her sister warmly. ""Mom and Dad would be so proud of you.""

""They'd be proud of both of us,"" Clara whispered softly, smiling toward the front entrance. ""Look who just arrived.""

Ruby turned around.

Valente Carmine walked through the grand double doors. He was dressed in an impeccable charcoal three-piece suit, his dark hair neatly styled, looking every bit the refined philanthropist. Over the past six months, Valente had systematically liquidated his illicit enterprises, transferring billions into legitimate shipping lines, real estate developments, and community trusts. He had walked away from the underworld, using his immense wealth to rebuild the city he had once ruled from the shadows.

He carried a single, perfect long-stemmed red rose in his hand.

As he walked toward her, the room seemed to fade away. The staff, the guests, and the bustling kitchen noise melted into a gentle hum.

""Miss Bennett,"" Valente said, bowing his head with that familiar, charming half-smile that never failed to take her breath away. ""Your restaurant is magnificent.""

""It's our restaurant,"" Ruby corrected softly, stepping into his space, her eyes sparkling. ""And you're late for your reservation, Mr. Carmine.""

""I apologize,"" he said, handing her the rose. ""I had a meeting with the city council. They officially approved the redevelopment grant for the south district youth center. Clean permits, no bribes, no threats.""

""Look at you,"" Ruby teased gently, brushing an invisible speck of dust from his lapel. ""A legitimate businessman.""

""Only because someone taught me that some things are worth building the right way,"" Valente murmured, his voice rich and tender.

He looked around the dining room, admiring the warm lighting, the laughter of the staff, and the feeling of absolute peace that filled the room. Then, his gaze settled on table six—the booth near the front window, identically positioned to where he had sat on that fateful, terrifying night.

""Table six is reserved for us tonight, I presume?"" Valente asked softly.

""Permanently reserved,"" Ruby replied, slipping her hand into his.
