Chapter 1 - The Ringing in the Cold Rain

The blast did not feel like sound at first; it hit Ruby Bennett’s chest like a physical fist. The shockwave slammed through the front plate-glass windows of Il Giardino, blowing out shards of diamond-sharp glass across the sidewalk. Ruby dropped instinctively, wrapping her arms around the elderly couple from table six, shielding the weeping woman with her own coat. The heat rolled over the wet asphalt behind them—thick, oily, and reeking of burnt upholstery, sulfur, and pulverized plaster.
Sirens immediately screamed in the distance, swallowed almost instantly by the dull ringing in Ruby’s ears. People were shouting, running into the rain, tripping over curb lines and slipping on wet cobblestones. Ruby pushed herself up, her palms bleeding from tiny cuts, her apron covered in grime. Her breath came in ragged, burning gasps. The restaurant was gone. Inside, flames crawled eagerly over splintered walnut booths and ruptured chandeliers.
""Where is he?"" she whispered, staring into the inferno.
Just as the smoke billowed thickest from the gaping doorway, two shadows broke through the haze. Leo, his navy overcoat torn along the shoulder and face smeared with black soot, dragged someone clear of the collapsing overhang. Valente Carmine stumbled out onto the rain-slicked pavement. His pristine white shirt was ruined, stained with ash and streaks of crimson down his left forearm, but his eyes were wide awake, predatory, and deadly.
He didn't look like a man who had barely escaped death. He looked like an apex predator whose territory had just been violated.
Valente shrugged off Leo’s support, his gaze cutting through the chaotic throng of crying patrons, gaping pedestrians, and flashing emergency lights. He didn't look at the burning building behind him. He didn't look at the approaching police cruisers. He swept the crowd until his eyes locked directly onto Ruby, kneeling on the wet asphalt beside the elderly couple.
He walked straight toward her. Every step was deliberate, unhurried, cutting through the panic like an icebreaker through frost.
""You're bleeding,"" Ruby stammered as he stopped in front of her.
""Glass,"" Valente said. His voice was remarkably steady, though gravelly from the smoke. He reached down with his right hand—clean, warm, and steady—and closed his fingers gently around her forearm, lifting her smoothly to her feet. ""Did anyone follow you out the front?""
""No,"" Ruby said, trembling now as the adrenaline began its violent downward spike. ""No, Davis took the kitchen route. He was gone before I reached Leo.""
""Davis didn't act alone,"" Valente murmured, his dark eyes scanning the perimeter of the street. Shadows hovered at the edge of the alleyway opposite the restaurant. A black sedan idled with its headlights off two blocks away. Valente noticed it instantly, his jaw tightening into iron. ""They expected me to die at that table. When they realize I walked out, they're going to clean up every loose thread.""
""Loose thread?"" Ruby pulled back slightly, terror spiking through her veins. ""I’m just a server. I don't know anything about you or your business.""
""You saw the busboy. You saw Davis walk. And you warned me,"" Valente said, stepping closer, effectively shielding her body from the street with his broad frame. ""In their world, Bennett, that makes you the primary witness. That makes you target number one.""
Before Ruby could protest, Leo appeared at Valente’s elbow, holding a burner phone that was vibrating furiously. ""Boss, the street is compromised. We have three minutes before municipal responders block the intersection, and Moretti’s scouts are already circling the perimeter.""
Valente didn't hesitate. He took Ruby’s jacket from the ground, shook the debris off it, and draped it over her trembling shoulders. ""Get in the car.""

""I can't!"" Ruby gasped, remembering her world. ""My sister, Clara. She's alone in our apartment. She’s sixteen, she has asthma, she doesn't know where I am—""
Valente’s face softened by a millimeter, the fierce cruelty replaced by an unbreakable command. ""Give Leo your address. My people will have her in an armored vehicle before you reach the safehouse. Nobody touches what is under my protection, Ruby. You saved my life tonight. From this second forward, your debts are paid, and your enemies are mine.""
