Chapter 5 - Whispers Across the Grand Ballroom

Victoria arrived in a cloud of heavy floral perfume, her lips painted the exact shade of arterial blood. Two of her sycophantic friends flanked her like pet poodles, sneering in unison.

""Julian, darling,"" Victoria purred, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness that failed to mask the sharp edges beneath. ""I must say, I am shocked you had the audacity to show your face tonight after your disgraceful exit from my father's board.""

Julian offered a cool, devastatingly bored smile. ""I came to support the charity, Victoria. It seems even your presence couldn't completely ruin a noble cause.""

Victoria’s gaze snapped down to Elena, sweeping over her from her hair to the hem of her gown with venomous condescension. She leaned forward, squinting mockingly.

""And who is this charming creature?"" Victoria scoffed, making sure her voice carried to the surrounding crowd. ""Julian, please don't tell me you resorted to hiring an escort agency to replace me. She looks... tragically common.""

Elena felt the hot flush of old shame threatening to rise up her neck, but she remembered Julian's words in the foyer: Hyenas in expensive silk. She recalled surviving Ryan’s wrath, scrubbing tables until two in the morning, and pulling herself out of poverty through pure grit.

Elena raised her chin, her hazel eyes locking with Victoria’s icy glare without flinching. ""Common people build the world, Miss Sterling. Some of us just don't need a trust fund to buy our self-respect.""

A collective gasp rippled through the onlookers. Victoria’s face instantly hardened, her cheeks flushing beneath her heavy foundation. Nobody in this room had ever dared speak to a Sterling in such a tone.

""You insolent little tramp,"" Victoria hissed, stepping closer. ""Do you even know who I am? I could snap my fingers and have you scrubbing toilets in a homeless shelter by morning!""

""That would be difficult,"" a smooth, chilling voice intervened.

Julian stepped forward half an inch, his frame casting a dark shadow over Victoria. The sheer aura of cold menace radiating from him caused Victoria’s two friends to instantly retreat two steps.

""Miss Vance is my personal guest,"" Julian stated, his voice quiet, calm, and terrifyingly lethal. ""Every insult you direct at her is an insult against the Moretti family. Choose your next words with immense care, Victoria. Your father’s bank accounts may not survive the night if your tongue outpaces your intellect.""

Victoria scoffed loudly, attempting to mask the genuine fear flashing in her eyes. ""You don't frighten me anymore, Julian! You think you rule this city? This is high society! Money and breeding run this room—not mob intimidation!""

Suddenly, an agitated commotion erupted near the ballroom’s secondary entrance.

Several hotel security guards were shouting, attempting to restrain an unkempt man who had slipped past the kitchen entrance. He was disheveled, wearing a wrinkled sport coat, his right arm bound in a heavy white cast and sling.

Ryan Blake.

His face was flushed with frantic desperation, his eyes bloodshot. He had used his family's minor social ties to bluff his way past the outer gates, frantically hunting for the girl who had vanished from his grasp the night before.

""Elena!"" Ryan screamed across the ballroom, pointing his good hand violently toward the center of the hall. ""Elena, you treacherous bitch!""

The entire ballroom fell into stunned silence as the drama shifted into complete madness.
