Chapter 2 - The Man in the Bespoke Coat

The black Mercedes Maybach purred like a sleeping panther against the curb, its tinted windows completely blacking out the curious stares of the few late-night stragglers. The bodyguard opened the rear door with robotic elegance.
Elena stood frozen on the sidewalk. Common sense screamed at her that stepping into a limousine with a rumored underworld kingpin was reckless beyond comprehension. Yet four months of running, skipping meals, ducking into alleyways, and living in constant terror of Ryan’s shadow had completely worn away her defenses. When she looked down at Ryan—still groveling on the asphalt, spitting curses while Tony glared at him with the bat—and then looked at Julian Moretti holding the door open for her, she knew her old life was already over.
""I don't have anywhere to pay you back for this, Mr. Moretti,"" Elena said, trying to steady the tremble in her lower lip. Her voice was small, but her chin remained stubborn. ""I work twenty-hour weekends just to cover half my rent. If this is a debt, you picked the wrong server.""
A slow, devastating smirk curved Julian’s lips. ""I don't collect debts from women who stand their ground against bullies, Miss Vance. Get in. The heater is on.""
Swallowing hard, she slid into the buttery leather interior. It felt less like a vehicle and more like a private jet cabin. Julian slid into the seat across from her, his long legs crossing gracefully. The door shut with a heavy, pressurized thud that instantly sealed out all sound from the chaotic street. The vehicle glided forward so smoothly she barely felt the tires rolling against the asphalt.
""Check her arm,"" Julian ordered quietly.
The front passenger turned around. It was a severe-looking woman with cropped silver hair, dressed in a sharp blazer, carrying a compact medical kit. Within minutes, Elena’s bruised arm was cleaned, soothed with an herbal anesthetic balm, and wrapped in a soft compression bandage.
""You're in shock,"" Julian observed, handing her a crystal tumbler filled with amber liquid from a concealed bar cabinet. ""Drink it. It's vintage Macallan. It won't hurt you.""
She hesitated, then took a tiny sip. A ribbon of smooth fire cascaded down her throat, settling the violently shaking muscles in her stomach. Color gradually returned to her cheeks.
""Why did you help me?"" she asked bluntly, looking directly into his piercing gaze. ""Men like you don't hang out in greasy alleyways outside cheap trattorias out of the goodness of their hearts.""
Julian leaned back into the leather, swirling his own glass. ""You're observant. I appreciate that. I was in the neighborhood settling an overdue account with a supplier down the avenue. I stepped out for a cigar, and your little domestic drama unfolded right in front of me."" His eyes hardened slightly, the silver specks within them flashing. ""I find men who place violent hands on defenseless women to be uniquely offensive. A severe character flaw that requires swift, permanent correction.""
""Ryan isn't just a violent jerk,"" Elena murmured, looking down at her scuffed sneakers. ""He’s an obsessive stalker. He thinks he owns me because his family has local connections in real estate.""
""The Blake family?"" Julian asked, raising an eyebrow with unmistakable disdain. ""Gerald Blake's mediocre son?""
Elena looked up, startled. ""You know him?""
""I know his father is currently begging my investment firm for a commercial loan to save their failing construction firm,"" Julian said smoothly, taking a measured sip. ""Which means, Miss Vance, your former tormentor just signed his family's absolute financial ruin with his own broken wrist.""
Elena sat stunned. For four agonizing months, Ryan had terrorized her with threats of having his father evict her, ruin her credit, and blacklist her from every restaurant in the borough. He had wielded his family’s moderate wealth like an executioner’s axe over her neck. And here sat a man who could erase that entire family with a single phone call, discussing them as casually as swatting a gnat.
""Where are you taking me?"" she asked suddenly, realizing the car had crossed the bridge and was ascending into the glittering hills of the city's most exclusive private enclave.
""To my estate,"" Julian answered without missing a beat. ""You need a safe bed, proper food, and a lock on your door that cannot be broken by a drunken coward. Tomorrow morning, you and I will have a conversation about your future.""
May you like
""My future?""
""Indeed,"" Julian murmured, his gaze tracing the fierce, resilient spark that still burned brightly beneath her exhaustion. ""Because starting tonight, Elena, nobody will ever look down on you again.""
