Chapter 4 - The Golden Cage and the Venomous Ex

The transformation took six hours. A team of elite stylists, makeup artists, and jewelers swarmed Elena’s suite under the strict direction of Julian’s personal aesthetic director. When they finally stepped back, Elena could barely recognize the woman reflected in the gilded tri-fold mirror.
Her honey-brown hair had been styled into loose, elegant waves that cascaded over one bare shoulder. Her hazel eyes were subtly accentuated with smoky bronze tones, highlighting their fierce, luminous depth. But the centerpiece was the gown: an off-the-shoulder masterpiece of deep emerald silk velvet, tailored so precisely to her contours that she seemed to glide rather than walk. Resting against her collarbone was the Moretti heirloom—a teardrop Colombian emerald necklace encircled by sixty carats of flawless diamonds, gleaming like cold starlight.
When she descended the grand marble staircase, Julian was waiting at the foot, wearing an immaculate black tuxedo. For a brief second, the mob boss's stoic, unreadable expression broke. His gaze lingered on her, his pupils dilating with unmistakable admiration.
""Breathtaking,"" Julian said softly, extending his arm.
Elena placed her gloved hand in the crook of his elbow. ""I'm terrified, Julian.""
""Good,"" he murmured, his thumb brushing reassuringly over her knuckles. ""Terror sharpens the instincts. Remember who you are. You survived the streets alone. These people are merely hyenas in expensive silk. Walk with your head high, and let them wonder why you aren't afraid of the dark.""
The Grand Plaza Hotel was a sea of flashing cameras and black-tie aristocracy when their midnight-black limousine pulled up to the red carpet. The moment Julian stepped out and extended his hand to assist Elena, the paparazzi erupted. Flashbulbs strobed in violent bursts, blinding reporters shouting over one another.
""Mr. Moretti! Who is the mystery woman?""
""Julian, is this your official response to the Sterling scandal?""
Julian completely ignored the media frenzy, shielding Elena with his broad frame as he escorted her up the carpet and through the towering brass doors into the magnificent Grand Ballroom.
Inside, crystal chandeliers cast shimmering light over five hundred guests drinking vintage champagne. But the temperature in the room plummeted the instant they entered. Conversations stopped mid-sentence. Diamond-draped matriarchs lowered their flutes. Whispers began racing through the crowd like wildfire.
Standing near the center champagne fountain was Victoria Sterling.
She looked radiant in an ostentatious crimson ballgown, dripping in rubies, holding court with a cluster of fawning socialites. She had been laughing loudly—until her eyes caught Julian entering. Her laughter instantly vanished.
Then Victoria saw Elena.
She saw the emerald dress. She saw the Moretti heirloom necklace—the very necklace Julian had notoriously refused to give Victoria during their engagement. And most of all, she saw the sheer, undeniable beauty of the woman standing confidently at his side.
A look of pure, venomous malice twisted Victoria’s porcelain features. She whispered a hurried excuse to her companions and began marching across the parquet floor, her stilettos clicking with predatory fury.

Julian felt Elena tense beside him. He subtly tightened his arm against hers, leaning his head down until his lips brushed her ear.
""She’s coming,"" he whispered smoothly. ""Hold your ground, my queen. The trap is sprung.""
