Chapter 10 - Where the Shadows Turn to Light

One year later.
The morning sun washed over the polished glass storefront of Vance & Co. Artisan Bakery on Fifth Avenue. The line of eager customers stretched half a block down the sidewalk, waiting for the freshly baked sourdough, delicate pastries, and world-class espresso.
Behind the counter, Tony—now the head general manager, proudly wearing an immaculate white chef's coat and a wide smile—was ringing up orders, laughing with local patrons. In the kitchen, Sal was supervising a team of young pastry chefs, whistling an actual tune for the first time in his life.
In the sunlit corner booth sat Elena, dressed in a chic cashmere sweater and tailored jeans, reviewing the ledger of their new community kitchen initiative. The business was flourishing, debt-free, and pouring half its profits into shelters for domestic abuse survivors across the state.
A bell chimed over the front door.
The entire café fell subtly quieter as a tall, imposing figure strode through the entrance. Julian Moretti had traded his three-piece mob suit for a sharp charcoal sweater and dark overcoat. The lethal edge that usually terrified the underworld melted completely away the moment his eyes landed on Elena.
He walked straight past the admiring glances of the crowd, leaned over the booth, and pressed a deep, loving kiss to her lips.
""You're late,"" Elena teased softly, running her fingers through his dark hair.
""A minor board meeting ran over,"" Julian replied with a wry smirk, sliding into the booth beside her. ""Though I believe our business rivals finally agreed to our terms.""
""Did you threaten to throw them out of a window?""
""I was a complete gentleman,"" he said smoothly, placing a warm hand over hers on the table.
On Elena’s ring finger, a breathtaking emerald diamond caught the morning sunlight, flashing with brilliant green fire. Six months ago, in front of a private gathering of their truest friends, Julian had knelt in the rain and asked her to be his wife.
The morning paper lay folded on the edge of the table. A small headline at the bottom of page four read: Victoria Sterling and Ryan Blake Sentenced to Ten Years in Federal Penitentiary for Fraud and Conspiracy.
Elena didn't even bother reading the article. Their names no longer carried any power, any fear, or any significance. They were ghosts buried in the past.
Julian picked up Elena's hand, kissing the knuckle right above the wedding band. ""Are you happy, my love?""
Elena looked around her bustling bakery, out at the bright, open avenue, and then into the warm, devoted eyes of the most powerful man in New York—a man who had torn down an entire dynasty just to see her smile.

""I'm finally home,"" she said, leaning her head against his shoulder.
And as the city hummed with life around them, the mob boss and the waitress who conquered his heart watched the morning light banish every remaining shadow."
