Chapter 3 - An Untouchable Invitation

When Elena woke the following morning, the sheer luxury surrounding her made her wonder if she had died in that greasy alley and gone to heaven.

She opened her eyes to high vaulted ceilings painted in soft ivory and gold leaf. She was buried under a down duvet so cloud-soft that moving felt criminal. Sunlight poured through floor-to-ceiling French windows overlooking manicured emerald lawns, marble fountains, and the shimmering blue expanse of the bay.

A quiet knock preceded the entry of a middle-aged woman in a crisp gray uniform, pushing a mahogany rolling cart loaded with fresh berries, warm croissants, smoked salmon, and a silver pot of steaming coffee.

""Good morning, Miss Vance,"" the housekeeper said warmly. ""Mr. Moretti requested you enjoy breakfast at your leisure. When you are finished, a selection of attire has been placed in the adjoining dressing room. He awaits you in the library on the ground floor.""

After showering in a master bathroom larger than her entire studio apartment, Elena walked into the walk-in closet. Rows of designer clothing—dresses, silk blouses, tailored trousers, and leather boots, all precisely tailored to her measurements—hung in pristine order. She selected an understated navy silk blouse and cream linen slacks, feeling an uncanny sensation of armor as the exquisite fabrics settled against her skin.

Ten minutes later, she walked into the estate's two-story library, where Julian Moretti sat behind an antique walnut desk, reviewing financial ledgers. He looked striking in the daylight, wearing an open-collared slate-gray shirt with the sleeves rolled to his forearms, revealing corded muscle and a dark tribal tattoo curling around his wrist.

""Sit, Elena,"" he said, setting aside his gold fountain pen.

She took the leather armchair opposite him. ""Your staff is incredibly kind, Mr. Moretti. But I still don't understand what you want from me. People like you don't do charity.""

""Quite right,"" Julian admitted, steepling his fingers. ""I am a businessman. Everything I do serves a strategic purpose. Which brings me to the proposal I wish to present.""

He slid a glossy, heavy cardstock envelope across the desk. Elena picked it up. Inside was a lavish gold-embossed invitation to the annual St. Jude Charity Gala, held at the Grand Plaza Hotel—the most prestigious, high-society gathering of the year.

""My former fiancée, Victoria Sterling, will be attending,"" Julian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy cadence.

The name struck Elena immediately. Victoria Sterling was the heiress to the massive Sterling Luxury Retail conglomerate—a staple of fashion tabloids, famous for her cruel public antics, vindictive lawsuits, and notorious cruelty toward service workers.

""Three months ago,"" Julian continued evenly, ""Miss Sterling chose to break our formal engagement by attempting to blackmail my board of directors, leaking fabricated records, and publicly humiliating my late mother's memory at a press banquet. She believes she is completely untouchable because her family holds key social capital among the old-money elite.""

""What does that have to do with me?"" Elena asked, bewildered.

""Victoria derives her power from feeling superior to others. She thrives on stepping on those she considers beneath her—much like your ex-boyfriend. Tonight is Victoria's grand crowning as the Gala's Chairwoman. She expects to be the center of the universe."" Julian leaned forward, his arctic eyes fixing intently on Elena. ""I need an escort. But not some empty-headed socialite who cowers before high society gossip. I want a woman who possesses true backbone. Someone real. Someone who has fought for every inch of her survival.""

""You want me to walk into a room of billionaires?"" Elena blurted out, her jaw dropping. ""I served spaghetti in an apron twelve hours ago!""

""And you stood tall against a violent brute while protecting your dignity,"" Julian countered instantly. ""You carry more grace in your little finger than Victoria has in her entire lineage. Play my companion tonight. Stand beside me. Let the world see that Julian Moretti favors an authentic woman of character over a plastic social parasite.""

Elena swallowed hard. ""And what do I get in return?""

Julian pulled open a drawer and slid a document across the wood. It was the deed to a stunning two-story commercial building in downtown Manhattan, accompanied by a cashier's check for half a million dollars.

""This is the deed to a prime culinary space on Fifth Avenue, completely debt-free, along with full startup capital,"" Julian stated calmly. ""Tony told me last night that your lifelong dream was to open your own artisan bakery. Do this for me tonight, play your part with absolute confidence, and tomorrow, you are an independent business owner. Ryan Blake will never touch you again. His father's company will belong to me by noon, and your safety is guaranteed for life.""

Elena stared at the deed, her hands trembling over the crisp paper. It was freedom. It was safety. It was every dream she had ever buried beneath double shifts and cheap tip jars.

She looked up into Julian’s waiting eyes and took a deep, steadying breath. ""Get me a dress.""
