Chapter 9 - The Trial of the Heart

He turned to walk out into the storm, to leave her safe from his darkness forever.
""Dominic, stop!"" Norah yelled, her voice ringing out across the ruined clinic.
Dominic froze on the threshold, the cold rain soaking his broad shoulders, his silhouette dark against the neon streetlights.
Norah walked through the crunching glass, her sneakers kicking aside the debris until she stood directly behind him. She reached out and grabbed his left hand, lacing her delicate fingers through his rough, scarred ones, pulling him back inside.
""Look at this clinic, Dominic,"" she said, gesturing to the shattered glass and overturned tables. ""Do you think I'm made of porcelain? Do you think I survived three years of blood in the emergency ward just to hide under a bed when life gets ugly?""
Dominic turned slowly, his eyes tortured. ""You could have died tonight because of me!""
""I could have died three years ago when a drunk driver hit my car! I could have starved to death in that rat-infested apartment if I hadn't taken the job to patch you up!"" Norah stepped closer, placing both of her hands flat against his broad chest, right over his pounding, healed heart. ""You didn't bring darkness into my life, Dominic Rossi. You brought respect. You gave me the courage to stand on my own feet. You watched over me every single night because you cared more about my safety than your own empire.""
Dominic's throat tightened, a crack appearing in the impenetrable armor he had worn his entire life. ""I love you, Norah,"" he confessed, the words torn from the deepest, most guarded depths of his soul. ""I have loved you since the moment you looked at my gun and told me to let you pay your rent. But I cannot offer you a normal life. My world is filled with blood, shadows, and enemies.""
Norah looked up into the eyes of the ruthless Don, her gaze burning with an unshakeable, fierce devotion.
""I don't want a normal life, Dominic. I want a real one,"" she said, rising on her tiptoes. ""I don't need you to give up who you are. But I need you to let me heal the wounds you carry on the inside, just like I healed the ones on the outside.""

Dominic let out a ragged, broken breath, wrapped his arms around her waist, and lifted her off the floor, crashing his lips onto hers in a fierce, hungry, desperate kiss that erased every shadow, every doubt, and every ounce of pain they had ever endured.
The storm raged outside the broken windows, but inside, wrapped in the warmth of Dominic's fierce embrace, Norah knew she had finally found her home.
