Chapter 5 - The Fevered Confession

The master bedroom was transformed into a field hospital once more. It was 3:00 AM when Norah finally tied off the last suture, her scrub top soaked in sweat, iodine, and Dominic's blood.

She had worked relentlessly for three straight hours, cleaning out debris, reinforcing torn muscle fascias, and administering broad-spectrum intravenous fluids using a drip stand Leo had procured from an underground clinic. Dominic was drifting in and out of a deep delirium, his body shivering under high-grade rigors as his immune system fought off the trauma of the night.

Leo stood by the door, his face pale with exhaustion and newfound reverence. ""The Valenti family sent word thirty minutes ago,"" Leo said quietly. ""Julian's treason was isolated. When they heard Dominic walked into that warehouse and took down the faction with a single command, they backed off completely. The syndicate is secure.""

""I don't care about the syndicate,"" Norah said, her voice shaking with exhaustion as she adjusted the IV flow rate. ""I care that his arterial pressure is dangerously low. He lost over two pints of blood on that warehouse floor.""

""Take what you need from the estate,"" Leo said, bowing respectfully. ""Anything. You saved his life twice in forty-eight hours, Miss Hayes. You are the only person who has ever stood beside him when the guns went off.""

Leo backed out of the room, softly closing the heavy doors, leaving Norah alone in the dim glow of the bedside lamp.

Norah pulled a chair close, soaking a small washcloth in cool, lavender-scented water, and began wiping the sweat and grime from Dominic's forehead, temples, and neck. His sharp features were relaxed in unconsciousness, revealing the boyish vulnerability hidden beneath years of scars, violence, and merciless command.

Suddenly, his hand moved, catching her fingers against his chest. His touch was burning hot, but surprisingly gentle.

""Norah..."" he murmured, his dark eyes opening slightly, clouded by fever and narcotics.

""I'm here, Dominic,"" she whispered, leaning down. ""The bleeding is stopped. The traitors are gone. You're safe.""

""Not safe..."" he breathed, his voice cracking with an ache that pierced straight through her heart. ""Never safe. Since I was twelve years old, everyone who touched me... wanted something. Money. Power. Blood. My father beat loyalty into me with an iron rod... my brothers died trying to take my seat...""

Norah felt a lump rise in her throat. She squeezed his trembling hand between both of hers. ""I don't want your kingdom, Dominic.""

""I know,"" he whispered, a faint, heartbreaking smile touching his dry lips. ""You only wanted to pay your rent... you yelled at me like I was an ordinary man... you stood in front of the bullets for me...""

""You're a human being, Dominic. That's all that matters to me.""

Dominic's thumb slowly brushed across her knuckles, his eyes burning with an intense, raw emotion that terrified her far more than Julian's guns. ""Stay with me, Norah. Don't go back to that tiny apartment... don't disappear into that broken city. Let me give you the world.""

Norah's breath hitched. Looking down at the most feared man in the state, lying wounded and completely undone before her, she realized with terrifying clarity that she was no longer just his nurse. The boundary between clinical duty and profound, dangerous love had been completely destroyed.

""Rest now,"" she whispered, pressing her lips softly to his burning forehead. ""I'll be right here when you wake up.""
