Chapter 8 - The Price of Loyalty

Norah did not close her eyes. She stood tall behind her counter, staring down the black bore of Julian's revolver with the same unyielding courage she had shown when Dominic had threatened her with a gun on their first day.

""Do it, Julian,"" she said, her voice cutting through the tense air like a scalpel. ""Kill me. And know that Dominic will hunt you to the ends of the earth. You will die alone in the dirt, screaming for mercy, and no one will ever remember your name.""

Julian's face twisted in demonic fury. ""Bitch—""

The heavy plate-glass window of the clinic exploded into a million shimmering shards.

Before Julian could pull the trigger, a dark, armored figure crashed through the frame. A single, muffled gunshot echoed, and Julian screamed as his right kneecap was blown apart, sending him crashing into the broken glass on the floor.

Dominic Rossi stood amidst the wreckage.

He wore a dark tactical vest over a blood-spattered shirt, his eyes blazing with a feral, terrifying rage that made the temperature in the room plummet to sub-zero. Behind him, Leo and a dozen heavily armed guards stormed the entrance, instantly subduing Julian's two associates and disarming them within seconds.

Dominic didn't even look at the screaming traitor writhing on the floor. His eyes swept across the room until they locked onto Norah.

In three long strides, he crossed the shattered clinic, grabbed her by the shoulders, and pulled her violently against his chest. His heart was hammering with frantic, wild terror—the terrified panic of a man who had almost lost the only light in his dark soul.

""Are you hurt?"" he demanded, his hands trembling as he checked her face, her neck, her arms for blood. ""Did he touch you, Norah? Look at me! Did he hurt you?""

""I'm fine, Dominic... I'm okay,"" Norah gasped, burying her face into his neck, inhaling the intoxicating scent of rain, gunpowder, and cedarwood. The sheer relief washed over her so powerfully her legs gave out, but Dominic caught her effortlessly, holding her suspended in his iron embrace.

Dominic pressed a desperate kiss into her hair, his voice breaking into a ragged whisper. ""I was two minutes away... if I had been two minutes later...""

""You made it,"" she sobbed, holding onto his jacket with white-knuckled intensity. ""You came.""

Dominic lifted his head, turning his gaze toward Julian, who was crawling toward the broken door, leaving a thick smear of crimson across the white tiles. The tenderness in Dominic's face vanished, replaced by an expression of pure, cold annihilation.

""Leo,"" Dominic commanded softly.

""Yes, boss?""

""Take Julian to the industrial incinerator. Make sure there is nothing left to bury.""

""No! Dominic, please! Have mercy!"" Julian shrieked as Leo's men dragged him out into the pouring rain like a sack of garbage. His screams faded into the night as the black vans sped away.

The clinic fell silent, save for the sound of rain blowing through the shattered storefront. Dominic turned back to Norah, his fierce gaze filled with an agonizing despair.

""I brought the violence to your door,"" he whispered, stepping back as if his touch were poison. ""Everything I touch turns to ashes. You were right to reject my money, Norah. You deserve peace, and I am only war.""
