Chapter 6 - An Offer of Gold

Four days later, the torrential rains finally ceased, giving way to brilliant, crystalline autumn sunshine that poured through the massive French windows of the estate.

Dominic sat in a velvet armchair by the fireplace, dressed in a crisp black silk shirt with the cuffs rolled up, his right arm resting in a clean black medical sling. The color had returned to his cheeks, his fever had vanished, and the surgical drain had been successfully removed that morning without complication.

Norah stood across from him, packing her canvas duffel bag. The frayed, cheap jacket she had arrived in hung over the back of the chair. Her work was done.

On the coffee table between them sat a dark wooden box. Dominic reached forward with his uninjured left hand and opened the lid.

Inside sat stacks of hundred-dollar bills bound in bank bands, totaling two hundred and fifty thousand dollars, along with a set of brass keys.

Norah paused, looking down at the treasure. ""Leo already gave me the agreed five thousand, Dominic. This is far beyond our contract.""

""The five thousand was for tending to a gunshot wound,"" Dominic said, his deep, resonant voice filling the room with quiet intensity. ""This is for saving my life at the terminal. The keys belong to a private medical clinic on Elm Street. Fully equipped. Fully funded for the next ten years. You will never have to answer to a corrupt hospital administrator or worry about overdue rent again.""

Norah stared at the keys, her eyes filling with unexpected tears. It was everything she had ever dreamed of—independence, safety, the ability to practice medicine on her own terms without bureaucratic cruelty.

""Why are you doing this?"" she asked, her voice trembling slightly.

Dominic stood up, walking slowly toward her until he was standing merely inches away. He towered over her, his broad shoulders and commanding presence fully restored, but his gaze was filled with a gentleness reserved solely for her.

""Because you deserve to heal people who want to be saved,"" he said softly, lifting his hand to gently cup her cheek. ""And because a woman like you should never have to suffer in the shadows of this ruthless world.""

Norah leaned into his touch for a brief, electric second, closing her eyes as warmth flooded her chest. But then, she took a slow step back, breaking the contact.

""I can't take the clinic, Dominic,"" she said, her voice steady despite the ache in her throat.

Dominic frowned, his brow furrowing in confusion. ""Why? Is it not enough?""

""It’s too much,"" Norah replied, looking up into his dark eyes with unwavering honesty. ""If I take this clinic, I become indebted to the syndicate. I become another asset owned by Dominic Rossi. I stayed because you needed a nurse who saw you as a man, not a mob boss. If I leave with a golden cage, everything we went through becomes a business transaction.""

Dominic looked at her as if she were speaking an ancient, forgotten language. In his world, everyone had a price. Politicians, judges, hitmen, and allies—all could be bought with enough cash. But this broke girl from the downtown slums was refusing a fortune just to keep her dignity intact.

""You really are impossible,"" Dominic murmured, a mixture of awe and profound frustration coloring his words.

""I'm practical,"" Norah countered, smiling faintly through her tears. ""Keep the clinic. But I will take twenty thousand dollars. Ten for my back rent and debts, and ten to put a deposit on a small two-room practice in the old district. I will build it with my own hands, Mr. Rossi.""

Dominic stared at her for a long time, the fire in his eyes burning with an admiration so deep it took his breath away. ""On one condition,"" he whispered.

""What condition?""

""You allow me to be your first patient.""

Norah's heart skipped a beat. She zipped up her duffel bag, slung it over her shoulder, and extended her hand. ""Deal, Mr. Rossi. Your follow-up appointment is in two weeks.""

Dominic ignored her hand, stepped forward, and pressed a firm, lingering kiss to the corner of her lips. ""I won't miss it, Norah.""
