Chapter 7 - Shadows in the City

Three weeks passed in a whirlwind of exhausting, exhilarating labor. Norah had secured a modest storefront in the old downtown district, just three blocks away from her old hospital. The twenty thousand dollars from Dominic had paid off her landlord, cleared her student loans, and allowed her to paint the walls a soothing eggshell white, install examination tables, and stock essential antibiotics.
The ""Hayes Community Health Clinic"" was humble, but it was hers. Every morning, she opened the doors to elderly neighbors, working mothers with sick children, and uninsured laborers who were turned away by the grand private hospitals uptown.
She was happy, yet an empty space hollowed out her chest every evening when she locked the glass front doors. Dominic had sent fresh, white lilies every single morning, anonymously delivered without a note, but he had not visited. The news headlines were filled with reports of massive crackdowns, mysterious warehouse fires, and the final dismantling of the rival Valenti crime family. Dominic was cleansing his empire of poison, fighting a silent war in the dark.
On a rainy Tuesday evening, as Norah was finishing her charting, the front door chimes jangled violently.
Two men in dark trench coats stepped inside, their faces obscured by caps. Behind them walked a familiar figure, though his appearance made Norah's breath seize in her lungs.
It was Julian.
His arm was in a sling, his face haggard and hollow, his eyes burning with unhinged, desperate malice. In his good hand, he held a revolver fitted with a bulky suppressor.
""Well, well,"" Julian sneered, kicking the clinic door shut and engaging the deadbolt. ""The little angel of mercy in her cheap little sanctuary.""
Norah slowly placed her pen down on the desk, keeping her hands visible, her heart pounding against her ribs like a sledgehammer. ""Julian. The police precinct is two blocks away. You won't make it to the end of the street.""
""The police are looking for me at the docks,"" Julian laughed bitterly, stepping closer, the barrel of the gun aimed straight at her forehead. ""Dominic took everything from me. My territory, my money, my family. He hunted down every man who stood with me. But he left you unprotected.""
""Dominic has nothing to do with this clinic,"" Norah said coldly, refusing to let her voice shake. ""I am just an independent nurse.""
""Don't lie to me, girl!"" Julian roared, slamming his fist onto the reception counter, sending glass jars of tongue depressors shattering across the floor. ""He dismantled an entire billion-dollar syndicate just to keep this sector clean and safe for you! He has men watching this corner night and day! But my boys took out his watchers in the alley ten minutes ago.""
May you like
Norah's eyes widened in realization. The quiet streets, the sudden lack of crime in her neighborhood—Dominic had been guarding her from the shadows all along.
""Now,"" Julian hissed, raising the weapon, his finger tightening around the trigger. ""Let's see how cold-blooded the great Don Rossi really is when I send him your pretty little head in a box.""
