Chapter 9 - The Reckoning of Dorothea Alden

By noon, the blizzard had broken into a pale, crystalline winter sunlight that illuminated the grand steps of the Federal District Courthouse. News vans from every major network lined the perimeter, their cameras pointed at the massive bronze doors as reporters shouted into live feeds, broadcasting the most explosive corporate scandal in the city’s history.

The broadcast anchors spoke with breathless shock: ""In a stunning dawn raid orchestrated jointly by the Department of Justice and Vance Maritime Enterprises, over eighty million dollars in stolen assets and fraudulent bonds were recovered at North Pier. Prominent corporate attorney Dorothea Alden and hospitality executive Julian Vance have been taken into custody without bail on federal racketeering, grand larceny, and attempted murder charges.""

Inside the federal holding facility, Dorothea Alden sat across an interrogation table, stripped of her fur coat and high-society arrogance. Her designer silk blouse was rumpled, her hair disheveled, and her wrists were locked in cold iron. Agent Evelyn Miller sat across from her, dropping a mountain of physical evidence onto the table with a series of heavy, definitive thuds.

""The original 2022 Vance family trust, recovered from your illegal private safety deposit box,"" Miller began, ticking off the items on her fingers. ""Julian Vance’s handwritten shipping manifests dating back eighteen months. The recorded audio from Bay 4. And the full, sworn deposition of Wren Calloway.""

Dorothea’s lawyer, a sweating junior partner from her firm, leaned over to whisper in her ear, but Dorothea silenced him with a venomous glare. She looked at Miller, her voice trembling with barely suppressed panic. ""I am entitled to executive immunity under client-attorney privilege regarding the Vance estate's internal operations!""

The door to the interrogation room swung open. Callum Vance walked in, accompanied by the United States Attorney for the Eastern District. Callum looked down at the woman who had served his father for decades, his gaze utterly devoid of mercy.

""My father considered you family, Dorothea,"" Callum said, his voice quiet, carrying the finality of a stone dropping into an abyss. ""He trusted you with his legacy. You thought you could leverage his death to carve up his empire with Julian and Kellner. You thought you could butcher an innocent working woman and frame me for the ashes.""

""Callum, please..."" Dorothea stammered, the realization of a mandatory life sentence in a federal correctional institution finally cracking her icy facade. ""Julian approached me! It was his plan! He brought Kellner into the fold! I was only trying to protect the firm's equity!""

""Julian just signed a full confession implicating you as the mastermind behind the fraudulent offshore trust and the hit ordered on Miss Calloway,"" the U.S. Attorney stated coldly, sliding a legal document across the table. ""Under the federal kingpin statute, you are looking at thirty-five years to life without the possibility of parole. You will never set foot in a courtroom again, Dorothea, except as a convicted felon.""

Dorothea collapsed back into her chair, her face draining of all color as the federal marshals stepped forward to escort her to the basement cells. Callum turned and walked out of the holding area, closing the door on the ghosts of his past once and for all.
