Chapter 4 - A Ghost in the Shadows

Wren froze for a split second, her survival instincts overriding panic. The office offered no secondary exits—no balcony, no adjoining bathroom. With the footsteps just yards from the door, she shoved the green notebook securely into the inner lining of her coat and darted toward the heavy velvet window drapes hanging along the outer wall. She slipped behind the thick fabric, pressing her back against the freezing glass just as the office handle turned.
The door swung open, flooding the darkened room with hall light. Julian Vance strode in, his tailored suit immaculate, followed by the hulking, broad-shouldered silhouette of Marcus Kellner. Kellner’s hands were stuffed into the pockets of his dark overcoat, his expression stone-cold and grim.
""I told you not to leave the girl where she could be discovered,"" Julian hissed, pouring himself two fingers of scotch from the decanter on the desk without offering any to his companion. ""The police haven't reported a body, Marcus. Do you realize what that means? If Callum finds her before she freezes, everything we've planned for the third unravels!""
Kellner sneered, stepping closer to the desk with an aura of raw menace. ""Relax, Julian. Nobody survives four hours in zero-degree weather with two fractured ribs and industrial cord around their wrists. Even if Callum’s patrol stumbled onto her, she’s either a corpse or braindead from hypothermia. She was just a waitress. She didn't know what she was listening to.""
""She looked right at the access codes, you idiot!"" Julian snapped, slamming his glass onto the mahogany surface, splashing bourbon across the blotter. ""She worked here four years. She knows how to read people. That’s why Callum favored her section whenever he dined here. If Callum connects her disappearance to Bay 4 before midnight tomorrow, Dorothea won't be able to protect us from the federal grand jury.""
Behind the velvet curtain, Wren held her breath, every muscle screaming in agony as she remained perfectly motionless against the icy pane. Through her earpiece, she could hear Callum’s heavy, controlled breathing. He was listening to his own blood betray him in real-time, hearing his cousin orchestrate the destruction of their family legacy.
""Dorothea already filed the emergency injunction papers with Judge Harris,"" Kellner replied calmly, pulling an encrypted radio from his pocket. ""The audit team arrives at North Pier at 8:00 AM on the third. At 6:00 AM, my crew will load the remaining bullion into three unmarked refrigerated haulers. When the auditors unlock the vault, it will be empty, and the security logs will show Callum’s personal override keycard was used to purge the systems at dawn.""
""And the Vance name becomes toxic waste overnight,"" Julian smiled, a sickeningly smug expression washing over his features. ""Callum goes to federal prison for grand larceny and corporate treason, and I step into the chairman’s seat with Dorothea pulling the strings from the shadows.""
Julian reached down to grab his coat from the back of his chair, brushing inches away from the curtain where Wren stood concealed. She closed her eyes, praying her erratic heartbeat wouldn't betray her presence. Julian paused, his eyes narrowing as he glanced toward the bottom drawer of his desk, which Wren had left cracked open by a fraction of an inch.
He took a step toward the drawer.
""Julian! We don't have time for you to admire your paperwork,"" Kellner barked from the doorway, checking his watch. ""Dorothea is waiting at the downtown club. She wants the final manifest signed tonight.""

Julian hesitated, glanced back at the drawer, and shrugged. ""Fine. Let's go put the final nail in my cousin’s coffin.""
They exited, the office door clicking shut behind them. Wren exhaled a shaky, silent breath, waiting twenty agonizing seconds before stepping out from the curtain. ""Callum... I have the book. And they just confessed to everything.""
