Chapter 2 - The Paper Trail of Blood and Ash

Special Agent Evelyn Miller did not look like a bureaucratic crusader. Dressed in a sharply tailored navy pantsuit with graying hair pulled into a severe bun, she entered the room with the quiet authority of someone who had spent two decades putting untouchable executives in federal penitentiaries. She bypassed the pleasantries, casting a single, sharp look at Wren’s battered face before pulling a ruggedized laptop from her briefcase and setting it on the dining table.
""You're lucky to be breathing, Miss Calloway,"" Miller said, typing rapidly as the machine booted. ""Callum has been a confidential informant for my special task force for twenty-four months. We knew Dorothea Alden’s legal firm was laundering dirty equity through the maritime docks, but every time we subpoenaed the physical manifests, the shipping containers miraculously vanished at sea or caught fire in the yards. We lacked the internal blueprint. We lacked the link between the legal board and the harbor muscle.""
""Booth Nine,"" Wren said, stepping forward despite the ache in her side. She leaned over the table, watching the glowing screen populate with shipping routes, corporate hierarchy charts, and blurry surveillance photographs. ""Kellner met three times with a courier named Julian Vance. Callum’s cousin.""
Callum went entirely still. The air in the penthouse plummeted several degrees. ""Julian? Julian runs the hospitality wing. He manages the real estate portfolio for The Lockwood and the downtown venues.""
""He was handing over physical seal numbers,"" Wren explained, her photographic memory replaying the late-night shifts with crystal clarity. ""Julian would sit with his back to the mirrored wall, slide a manila envelope under the leather menu, and tell Kellner: 'The customs stamps are pre-cleared for the southern slip. If Vance looks into Bay 4, tell him the concrete foundation is shifting.' They weren't just moving regular cargo. They were staging something massive for the third.""
Agent Miller pulled up a satellite rendering of the North Pier. Her fingers flew across the keyboard, highlighting Bay 4 in bright crimson. ""Julian Vance signed an emergency maintenance permit for Bay 4 three weeks ago. Under the guise of structural repairs, heavy transport trucks have been entering the facility between 3:00 AM and 5:00 AM without transponder tracking. Callum, what could they possibly be holding in that bay that requires your signature on the insurance release?""
""My father's private art and bullion reserves,"" Callum answered, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. ""The Vance estate keeps seventy million dollars in bearer bonds, rare metals, and classical provenance in the underground vaults beneath Bay 4 as liquidity collateral for maritime insurance underwriting. If Bay 4 is emptied and reported stolen under my watch on the morning of the audit, the underwriting syndicate collapses, forcing the liquidation of all Vance Marine shares. Dorothea Alden’s offshore group would buy the controlling interest for pennies on the dollar.""
""And Kellner tried to kill me because I was clearing the glasses when Julian dropped the combination sequence,"" Wren whispered, the realization sending a cold shudder down her spine. ""I didn't even realize what I was looking at. A slip of paper with seven digits and a date: 12-03. Julian saw my eyes glance at the napkin before I bussed the table. That was the night the air changed.""
""Julian called Kellner that very night to eliminate the loose thread,"" Callum deduced, his fists curling into white-knuckled balls. ""They wanted to frame the theft as an inside job carried out by disgruntled staff, using you as the sacrificial lamb found dead with the access codes in your pocket. But their clean execution got sloppy. The snow slowed them down, you fought back, and they dumped you prematurely.""
""We need the physical ledger Julian used to verify the seal numbers,"" Wren urged, turning to Callum and Miller. ""He keeps a small, green pocket notebook in his private office on the second floor of The Lockwood. I’ve seen him write in it every Friday when closing out the bar tabs. If we can get that notebook before Kellner realizes I'm alive, we can link Julian to the North Pier shipments before the vault is even breached.""
May you like
Agent Miller shook her head grimly. ""The Lockwood is crawling with Julian’s private security. The moment a federal badge steps through the front door, that notebook goes into an industrial shredder. A search warrant takes seventy-two hours, and we don't have probable cause without your sworn testimony, which tips our hand immediately.""
Wren locked eyes with Callum. ""Then you don't send a federal agent. And you don't send an army. You send the waitress who has a master key to the back office.""
