Chapter 10 - Dawn on the Waterfront

Two months later, the bitter cold of winter had begun to loosen its grip on the city, giving way to the fresh, crisp breezes of early spring. The Lockwood had reopened under entirely new management, completely cleansed of Julian’s corrupt shadow and the whispers of illicit backroom dealings. The restaurant was thriving, its reputation restored as the premier culinary jewel of the waterfront district.

Down at the private harbor pavilion overlooking the North Pier, the sun was setting across the calm Atlantic waters, painting the horizon in breathtaking shades of gold and violet.

Wren Calloway stood on the boardwalk, leaning against the polished mahogany railing. Her fractured ribs had fully healed, the bruises had long faded from her porcelain skin, and the haunting memory of the freezing alley had been replaced by a serene, profound peace. She wore a tailored beige trench coat, her hair dancing softly in the ocean breeze, holding a leather folder containing her newly minted corporate credentials.

Footsteps approached—even, steady, familiar.

Callum Vance walked up beside her, holding two warm paper cups of artisan coffee from the local roastery. He handed one to her, his fingers brushing hers with a warmth that sent a pleasant, electric current through her chest.

""You look remarkably comfortable standing on a pier you almost died trying to save,"" Callum said softly, a genuine, rare smile gracing his handsome features.

""I spent four years watching people like you from behind a service tray, Callum,"" Wren replied, taking a sip of the rich coffee, looking out over the tranquil harbor. ""I thought this city was entirely owned by men who take whatever they want and discard the people who get in their way. It’s nice to know that sometimes, the good guys actually win.""

""The good guys only won because of you,"" Callum said, his tone turning deeply sincere. He turned to face her, his dark eyes filled with an admiration that went far beyond gratitude. ""The board unanimously approved the restructuring this morning. Vance Maritime has established an independent oversight foundation to protect port workers and whistleblowers across the entire eastern seaboard.""

He tapped the leather folder in her hands. ""Which brings me to your contract. Director of Harbor Compliance and Corporate Integrity. You have total executive authority to inspect any manifest, audit any bay, and overrule any executive on the payroll—including me.""

Wren looked at the contract, then up into Callum’s eyes, her lips curving into a wry, affectionate smile. ""You’re giving your former waitress the power to shut down your entire shipping empire if I don't like what I see in the books?""

""I’m giving that power to the only person in this city who was brave enough to stand up to kings, survive the cold, and keep me honest,"" Callum murmured, taking a step closer, closing the distance between them until she could feel the heat radiating from his chest. ""And because I don't ever intend to let you walk out of my life again.""

Wren felt her heart swell with an emotion she had spent years guarding against. The pain, the fear, the cold of that dark alley—it had all led to this moment of absolute triumph and unexpected belonging.

""I have one condition, Mr. Vance,"" Wren whispered, looking up into his eyes with playful defiance.

""Name it,"" Callum said, his hand gently finding hers along the wooden railing, their fingers intertwining naturally.

""Booth Nine at The Lockwood,"" Wren smiled softly, leaning into his touch as the evening stars began to pierce the twilight sky. ""From now on, that table is reserved exclusively for us.""

Callum laughed—a warm, rich sound that shook the quiet of the harbor—and pulled her close against his chest as the city lights flickered to life across the water, illuminating a future they would build together."
