Chapter 7 - The Vault Beneath Bay 4

December 3 arrived under a sky the color of tarnished pewter. A vicious winter blizzard howled off the Atlantic, whipping freezing spray and sleet across the rusted steel loading cranes of North Pier. By 5:30 AM, Bay 4 was an island of deceptive silence, surrounded by towering stacks of rusted shipping containers that blocked the harbor winds.

Inside the warehouse, the air was thick with diesel fumes and the sharp, metallic odor of cutting torches. Marcus Kellner stood atop the hydraulic lift of an industrial flatbed truck, barking orders to twelve heavily armed mercenaries clad in dark tactical gear. The massive subterranean steel blast doors leading to the vault beneath Bay 4 were wide open, their hydraulic locks melted and bypassed using Julian’s stolen access sequences.

Crates of gold bullion and reinforced steel lockboxes containing seventy million dollars in Vance family bearer bonds were being loaded rapidly into the beds of three unmarked, heavily armored transport haulers.

""Move it, damn it!"" Kellner roared over the roar of the diesel engines. ""The federal audit convoy leaves downtown at 7:30. We need these trucks across state lines before Callum’s private patrol even clocks in for shift change!""

From the darkened gantry catwalk fifty feet above the warehouse floor, Wren knelt beside Callum, peer through high-powered night-vision binoculars. Callum held an encrypted tactical radio, his face carved from dark, merciless granite. Below them, Julian Vance paced anxiously near the open vault, clutching a cup of cold coffee, jumping at every groan of the metal roof under the howling gale.

""They're taking everything,"" Wren whispered, pointing toward the third truck. ""Just like Julian outlined in the green notebook. Once those haulers clear the toll bridge, Julian reports the breach, and Dorothea files the emergency receiver motion.""

""They aren't clearing the gate,"" Callum replied, his thumb resting on the radio transmit button. ""Agent Miller, are your teams in position?""

""Six tactical units have sealed the northern and southern perimeter gates,"" Miller’s voice crackled softly through his ear. ""State police have the expressway barricaded. But Callum, we need physical possession of the stolen assets inside the vehicles to make the grand jury charges completely airtight against Dorothea.""

Right on cue, the blast doors of the side office flew open. Dorothea Alden strode out onto the warehouse floor, wrapped in a floor-length fur coat, completely out of place amid the grime and machinery. She marched directly toward Kellner, her expression twisted with frantic rage.

""Marcus, we have a catastrophic problem,"" Dorothea hissed, grabbing Kellner’s arm. ""I went to the Meridian Trust early this morning to pull the original Vance charter. My safe deposit box was cleared out. The pendant was a counterfeit! Callum has the unamended trust!""

Julian dropped his coffee cup, the dark liquid splashing across his leather boots. ""What?! How did he get the key?!""

May you like

""The girl,"" Dorothea snarled, her veins pulsing against her neck. ""The waitress took it at the gala while Julian was standing there trembling like a terrified child! Callum knows everything. He isn't waiting for the audit, Marcus. This whole morning is a trap!""

Kellner’s eyes flared with feral, bloodthirsty rage. He racked the slide of his automatic carbine with a deafening, metallic snap. ""Nobody leaves this bay alive. Julian, lock down the secondary rolling gates. If Callum Vance wants a war for this harbor, he’s going to get it right here in the blood.""
