Chapter 6 - Midnight at the Symphony

The Grand Ballroom of the Metropolitan Symphony Hall was a cathedral of marble, gold leaf, and crystalline chandeliers that refracted light across hundreds of the city's most powerful figures. Diamonds sparkled against haute couture silk, champagne flowed like water, and the gentle strains of a live chamber orchestra masked the ruthless corporate warfare being waged in polite whispers behind crystal flutes.
When the massive gilded doors opened, every conversation in the grand foyer came to a sudden, stuttering halt.
Callum Vance walked down the grand staircase looking every inch the formidable maritime kingpin. His tuxedo was tailored to razor-sharp perfection, his posture radiating unyielding dominance. But it was the woman on his arm that held the room captive.
Wren wore a backless emerald-green silk gown that clung to her silhouette, the high collar cleverly concealing the dark bruising around her throat. Her dark hair was swept into an intricate, elegant updo, exposing her sculpted cheekbones and high jawline. Dr. Lund had applied theatrical-grade makeup to mask the fading contusion near her temple, turning her into an aristocratic vision of dangerous poise.
From across the ballroom, Dorothea Alden froze, her champagne glass hovering halfway to her red-painted lips. Beside her, Julian Vance turned pale as chalk, his fingers trembling so violently he nearly dropped his crystal tumbler.
""Is that...?"" Julian choked, his voice cracking beneath the music.
""Impossible,"" Dorothea hissed through her teeth, her cold eyes raking over Wren’s smiling, composed face. ""Marcus swore she was incapacitated and dumped miles away. If that's Callum's waitress, she shouldn't even be standing, let alone walking into a high-society gala on his arm.""
Callum guided Wren gracefully through the parting crowd, acknowledging senators, judges, and shipping executives with slight, imperious nods. He leaned down, his lips brushing Wren’s ear in what looked like an intimate, romantic murmur to the onlookers. ""Dorothea has already clocked you. Julian looks like he’s about to vomit into the ice sculpture. Are you holding up?""
""My ribs are on fire, but my hands are completely steady,"" Wren replied under her breath, offering a dazzling, radiant smile to a passing city commissioner. ""Dorothea’s pendant is resting right against her collarbone. She’s wearing a low-cut velvet gown. It’s an easy lift once we close the distance.""
""Let's go rattle the cage,"" Callum said coldly.
They approached Dorothea and Julian with effortless grace. Callum extended his hand to his cousin, whose palm was slick with nervous sweat. ""Julian. You look remarkably pale for a man about to finalize our major harbor expansion. Overworking yourself at The Lockwood?""
""Callum... good to see you,"" Julian stammered, his eyes darting frantically toward Wren, trying to find a single trace of the battered woman he had ordered discarded in the snow. ""And... who is your captivating guest?""
Wren extended her gloved hand, her gaze locking onto Julian’s with a piercing, predatory amusement that made the man visibly recoil. ""Wren Calloway. I believe I've poured your scotch once or twice, Mr. Vance. Though tonight, I find the champagne much more satisfying.""
Dorothea Alden stepped in front of Julian, her calculating mind assessing the catastrophic implications of Wren’s survival. Her smile was like chipped ice. ""Miss Calloway. Quite a dramatic promotion from table service to high society. Tell me, Callum, since when do you parade your restaurant staff at the season's most prestigious gathering?""
""Since she proved to have a far sharper eye for corporate integrity than my legal counsel,"" Callum replied, his voice dropping into a lethal, low register that sent a shiver through Dorothea’s spine.
At that exact moment, a waiter carrying a silver tray stacked with sixty champagne glasses stumbled abruptly behind Dorothea—tripped intentionally by an undercover federal agent disguised as event staff. The sound of shattering crystal detonated across the parquet floor, unleashing a chorus of startled gasps.
Dorothea instinctively lurched backward. Wren stepped forward in a flash of seamless, rehearsed precision, catching the older woman by the elbow to steady her. ""Careful, Counselor Alden. The floors can be treacherous when you aren't paying attention.""
""Get your hands off me!"" Dorothea snapped, pulling away with disdain.

Wren stepped back gracefully, her head tilted, her hands clasped lightly against the front of her emerald gown. Beneath the palm of her white satin glove, the cool, ridged surface of the titanium biometric pendant was safely nestled.
""Enjoy the rest of your evening, Dorothea,"" Callum said quietly, turning on his heel. ""Make sure your calendar is open on the third. You wouldn't want to miss the finale.""
