Chapter 8 - The Price of Loyalty

The boardroom descended into immediate chaos. Two directors jumped to their feet, shouting over each other, demanding explanations from Victoria Caldwell.
Victoria scrambled to stand up, her designer bag tumbling to the floor. “This is ridiculous! She’s fabricating evidence! She’s an assistant, she doesn't have access to those clearance records!”
“She doesn't need clearance when your corporate lawyers are sloppy enough to use an Ashford subsidiary's server to route the transaction,” Ryan said, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet menace that paralyzed the room. He stepped toward the gallery, towering over Victoria. “Federal agents from the SEC are downstairs in the lobby as we speak, Victoria. I invited them myself an hour ago.”
Victoria looked frantically at William for help, but William Ashford was a cold pragmatist above all else. Seeing that the Caldwell ship was sinking, William slowly leaned back in his leather chair, crossing his arms and refusing to meet her gaze. The alliance was dead.
“Security,” Ryan commanded calmly. “Escort Miss Caldwell from the premises.”
Two armed security guards entered the room, flanking Victoria and leading her out past the stunned board members. Her high heels scraped awkwardly against the carpet, her social standing and corporate power evaporating with every step.
Ryan turned back to the mahogany table, looking at each director in turn. “The motion for a vote of no confidence is dead. And any member of this board who attempts to question my family or my leadership again will find their shares audited by the Department of Justice before the end of the week. This meeting is adjourned.”
Without waiting for a response, Ryan took Elena’s hand and led her out of the boardroom. The moment the heavy oak doors shut behind them, Elena leaned against the hallway wall, exhaling a long, shuddering breath. Her hands were shaking uncontrollably from the adrenaline.
“You were magnificent,” Ryan breathed, stepping close to her, his eyes filled with awe and admiration. “You didn't just save me, Elena. You saved this entire company.”
Elena looked up at him, a weary, bittersweet smile touching her lips. “I did my job, Mr. Ashford.”
“Don’t call me that,” Ryan pleaded softly, reaching out to gently cup her jaw. His thumb brushed against her cheek, desperate to bridge the distance she had put between them. “Please. You proved you belong here more than any of them. Stay with me. Be my partner. Be my wife.”
Elena’s heart twisted with agonizing pain. She leaned into his touch for a fleeting, stolen second before stepping backward, forcing his hand to fall away.
“I can't, Ryan,” she whispered, tears glistening in her dark eyes.
“Why?” Ryan’s voice broke, the billionaire titan completely reduced to an aching man. “Victoria is finished. The board is silenced. My father has no leverage. There’s nothing standing between us anymore!”
“Your father is still your father,” Elena replied softly, gesturing toward the executive suite. “Look around you, Ryan. This is your world. It’s filled with audits, betrayal, paparazzi, and corporate war. Maya needs peace. She doesn't need a stepmother who reminds everyone of a corporate scandal every time she walks into a school play.”
“Elena, Maya loves you!”
“And I love her too much to let her grow up in the middle of a media circus!” Elena’s voice cracked with emotion. She reached into her pocket, pulled out the one-million-dollar check Ryan had given her days ago, and pressed it into his palm. “I didn't do this for the money, Ryan. I did it because you and Maya deserved someone to fight for you. But the contract is over.”
Ryan stared at the check in his hand as if it were poison. “Elena, don't do this.”
“Goodbye, Ryan.”
May you like
Tears spilled over her cheeks as she turned and ran toward the service elevators. Ryan took two strides to chase after her, but the elevator doors slid shut with a cold, metallic snap.
She was gone. And for the first time since his wife died, Ryan Ashford fell to his knees in the empty executive hallway, feeling the suffocating, desolate silence of an empire that meant nothing without the woman he loved.
