Chapter 4 - The Whispers in the Dark

The waltz seemed to stretch into an eternity where the rest of the crowded ballroom faded away. For those few minutes, there were no board members watching, no predatory photographers snapping photos through the floral arrangements, and no looming threats from Victoria Caldwell. There was only the steady beat of Ryan’s heart beneath his tuxedo jacket and the warmth of his hand anchoring Elena to the floor.

When the music finally subsided to polite applause, Elena stepped back, breaking the intoxicating spell before it could consume her. Her pulse was racing, her cheeks flushed. She recognized the look in Ryan’s eyes—it was the look of a man who was falling fast, and that terrified her more than any threat from his father. Falling in love with Ryan Ashford was a luxury she couldn't afford; billionaires moved on, but working-class women were left to clean up the wreckage.

“I need some air,” she whispered hurriedly, turning toward the museum’s moonlit terrace.

Ryan moved to follow her, but a heavy hand gripped his forearm. It was Jonathan Vance, the chairman of the Ashford Global auditing committee and William’s oldest ally.

“A word, Ryan,” Vance said grimly, leaning in. “Your little romantic revolution is causing tremors. The board is receiving anonymous tips questioning your executive stability. There’s talk of invoking the legacy clause.”

Ryan’s jaw locked. The legacy clause allowed the board to suspend a sitting CEO if their personal conduct threatened shareholder value, transferring temporary control to the chairman—his father. “Who’s feeding these tips, Jonathan?”

“Who do you think?” Vance replied quietly. “Victoria Caldwell doesn't take defeat lying down. And your father won't stop until he controls your daughter’s trust fund and the company reins. You better make sure your little fiancée is bulletproof, Ryan. Because they’re digging into her past as we speak.”

Meanwhile, out on the stone terrace, Elena took a deep breath of the crisp night air, clutching the cold marble balustrade. She stared at the silhouettes of the Central Park trees against the Manhattan skyline, trying to steady her erratic breathing.

“Enjoying the view from the ivory tower?” a razor-sharp voice interrupted.

Elena turned to see Victoria stepping out from the shadows, a glass of champagne in her manicured hand. Her smile was sweet, but her eyes were devoid of warmth.

“Victoria,” Elena said evenly, standing straight. “Shouldn’t you be inside courting investors?”

“I don't need to court anyone, Elena. I belong here. You don’t.” Victoria took a slow sip, circling Elena like a sleek panther. “Did you really think a few sweet words and an expensive dress would make you one of us? Ryan is using you. He’s using you to punish his father, and the second he wins this corporate war, he will discard you like last week’s financial report.”

“You don't know anything about Ryan,” Elena countered, her chin lifted high.

“I know he loved his late wife, Sarah, with an obsession that broke him,” Victoria sneered softly, stepping closer. “And I know that when Sarah died, Ryan swore he would never let another woman into his heart. He doesn't love you, darling. You’re a tactical distraction. But let’s see how much he values you when your family secrets are plastered all over the New York Post.”

Elena’s stomach plummeted. “What are you talking about?”

“Your father, Mateo Cruz,” Victoria whispered viciously. “Thirty years of undocumented construction work before he got his papers. A few suspicious union settlements. Did you really think my investigators wouldn't dig into where every dollar of your college tuition came from?”

Elena felt the blood rush from her face. Her father had sacrificed his health and broken his back working day and night to keep their family afloat, sometimes taking cash jobs under the table during the worst recessions. If Victoria twisted those struggles into criminal fraud, her frail, sick father could face legal ruin.

“Leave my father out of this,” Elena hissed, her voice trembling with protective rage.

“Then walk away,” Victoria hissed back, leaning into Elena’s face. “Break the engagement tonight. Disappear from Ryan’s life. If you don't, I will destroy your father, your reputation, and whatever little future you thought you had. You have forty-eight hours to decide.”
