Chapter 7 - The Boardroom Ambush

The headquarters of Ashford Global rose fifty stories above Midtown Manhattan, a monument of steel and mirrored glass. Today, it felt like an execution ground.
By nine in the morning, television satellite trucks lined the avenue outside, reporters shouting questions every time an executive entered the lobby. Elena walked beside Ryan through the security gates, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.
Security guards formed a tight perimeter around them, pushing back the flashing cameras and thrust microphones. “Mr. Ashford, is it true you misappropriated corporate charity funds to pay off your assistant’s family debts?” “Elena Cruz, are you cooperating with federal auditors?”
Elena felt nauseous. The smear campaign was diabolical. Victoria and William hadn't just attacked Ryan’s character; they had fabricated a narrative that Ryan had funneled money into Elena’s father’s accounts, framing their relationship as a corrupt kickback scheme disguised as romance.
Inside the executive elevator, Ryan reached out and took Elena’s trembling hand, squeezing it with fierce reassurance. “Don’t listen to them. I have forensic accountants already tracing the leaked documents. They were forged from an IP address within Caldwell Shipping.”
“It doesn't matter if they’re forged, Ryan!” Elena said, her voice cracking. “The board will suspend you today to protect the stock price. And while you’re suspended, your father will file an emergency petition for temporary guardianship of Maya!”
Ryan’s eyes darkened into chips of obsidian. “He will have to pry my daughter from my cold, dead hands.”
The elevator chimed on the fiftieth floor. The boardroom doors opened to reveal twenty corporate directors seated around a massive oval mahogany table. At the head of the table sat William Ashford, flanked by high-powered corporate litigators. Victoria Caldwell sat in the guest gallery in the corner, a smirk of triumph playing across her painted lips.
“Take your seat, Ryan,” William commanded coldly, tapping a thick dossier on the table. “And your assistant can wait in the lobby.”
“Elena stays,” Ryan replied without hesitation, pulling out the chair directly beside him and waiting until Elena sat down. He stood tall, towering over the boardroom. “What is the meaning of this circus, Father?”
“This circus is your doing!” William thundered, tossing the dossier across the polished wood. “Anonymous whistleblowers within our compliance division have provided proof of massive financial irregularities tied directly to Miss Cruz’s offshore accounts. The Securities and Exchange Commission is already circling. Under Article Nine of our corporate bylaws, I am calling for an immediate vote of no confidence to remove you as Chief Executive Officer.”
A murmur of nervous agreement rippled through the older board members. Victoria leaned back in her chair, crossing her legs, savouring every second of Ryan’s humiliation.
“Before you vote,” Elena’s clear, steady voice sliced through the tension like a razor.
The entire boardroom went dead silent. William glared at her in disgust. “You are not a board member, Miss Cruz. You have no standing to speak in this room.”
“She has every right to speak,” Ryan countered dangerously. “Let her finish, or I walk out that door right now with every primary patent registered under my personal name, and Ashford Global loses half its market valuation before the opening bell.”
The board members shifted anxiously, signaling William to back down. William clenched his jaw, gesturing curtly for Elena to proceed.
Elena opened her portfolio, pulling out a stack of neatly bound financial audits. Years of working for multinational firms had taught her one crucial lesson: powerful men always leave digital footprints when they are arrogant.
“Mr. Ashford,” Elena began, addressing William directly, her voice ringing with absolute confidence. “You claim these forged transfer slips show money flowing from Ryan’s accounts to my father. But if you turn to page four of the authentic bank ledger provided directly by the Federal Reserve Bank this morning, you’ll notice the wire routing number does not belong to Ryan Ashford.”
Elena paused, turning her gaze directly toward Victoria Caldwell.
“The origin account belongs to a shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands under the name ‘Sea Breeze Holdings.’ And according to public corporate filings in Delaware, Sea Breeze Holdings is wholly owned by Caldwell Shipping.”

Victoria’s smirk instantly vanished. Color drained from her face as the entire boardroom turned to stare at her.
“Furthermore,” Elena continued, her eyes blazing with triumphant fire, “Caldwell Shipping shorted five hundred thousand shares of Ashford Global stock yesterday afternoon, anticipating the market panic caused by these leaked forgeries. That is not just corporate interference, gentlemen. That is federal market manipulation and insider trading.”
