Chapter 5 - Shadows Over the Penthouse

Elena barely spoke during the car ride back to the penthouse. The silence inside the Maybach was suffocating. Ryan watched her from the shadows of the backseat, noticing the way her knuckles remained clenched in her lap and the ghost-white pallor of her skin.

“What happened on the terrace?” Ryan asked, his deep voice slicing through the quiet. “You look like you saw a ghost.”

“Nothing,” Elena lied, staring out the window at the flickering neon lights of Broadway. “Just tired.”

“Elena. Look at me.”

She hesitated, then turned to meet his gaze. His eyes were dark, filled with genuine concern that made her throat tighten with ache. She wanted to tell him everything. She wanted to lean against his shoulder and let him use his billions to protect her family. But that was the trap. If she leaned on him, she would fall completely in love with him, and the fall would destroy her when the contract ended.

“Victoria threatened my father,” Elena confessed quietly, unable to hold it in any longer. “She hired investigators to dig into his old construction jobs. She wants to ruin him if I don't leave you.”

A terrifying stillness settled over Ryan’s features. The gentleness vanished, replaced by the lethal, calculating predator that had conquered Wall Street before the age of thirty. His jaw clenched so hard Elena could hear the faint grind of his teeth.

“She will never touch your father,” Ryan said, every word clipped and deliberate. “I will unleash a legal team that will bury the Caldwell family in antitrust lawsuits before they can draft a single subpoena.”

“And what about Maya?” Elena cried softly, tears threatening to spill over her dark eyelashes. “Your father and Victoria are ready to use the legacy clause to take your company and challenge your custody! Every time you fight back with money, Maya is the one caught in the crossfire! She’s an eight-year-old girl who just started smiling again!”

Ryan flinched as if struck. Elena’s words hit the rawest nerve in his soul. He looked away, his hands balling into fists on his knees.

When they arrived at the penthouse, the heavy penthouse doors clicked shut behind them, sealing them into the quiet luxury of the apartment. Maya was already asleep in her bedroom down the hall, watched over by the housekeeper.

Elena kicked off her painful designer heels, carrying them in her hand as she walked toward the guest room. The sheer exhaustion of the evening weighed on her like lead.

“Elena, wait,” Ryan called out softly from the kitchen.

She stopped and turned. Ryan had stripped off his tuxedo jacket and unbuttoned his collar, looking completely unraveled. He poured two glasses of water and walked over, handing one to her.

“Thank you,” she murmured, taking a small sip.

“Maya made something for you today before you arrived,” Ryan said, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a folded piece of construction paper.

Elena took the paper and unfolded it. Drawn in bright crayons was a picture of three people holding hands: a tall man with black hair, a little girl with a ponytail, and a woman in a green dress. Above them, in clumsy, eight-year-old handwriting, it read: My Real Family.

A single tear broke free, tracking down Elena’s cheek. She stared at the drawing, her heart breaking into a thousand pieces. She was an imposter, playing a cruel game of make-believe in a child’s home.

“She loves you, Elena,” Ryan said, his voice husky with raw vulnerability. He stepped closer, reaching up to gently brush the tear away with his thumb. His touch lingered against her skin, burning with forbidden heat. “And so do I.”

Elena froze, her breath catching in her throat. “Ryan... don't say that. It’s the contract talking. It’s the stress.”

May you like

“To hell with the contract,” Ryan muttered, stepping closer until his chest pressed against hers. His gaze dropped to her trembling lips. “I stopped thinking about the contract the second I touched you at that dinner table. You brought light into this house, Elena. You brought my daughter back to me. You brought me back from the dead.”

Before Elena could utter another protest, Ryan lowered his head and captured her mouth in a slow, searing kiss.
