Chapter 6 - Fire and Ice

Unlike the desperate four-second kiss in front of his family, this kiss was intoxicating, tender, and dangerously real. Ryan cradled Elena’s face in his large, warm hands, his thumbs caressing her cheekbones as he poured seven years of silent loneliness and unspoken longing into the kiss.

Elena gasped against his lips, her rational mind screaming at her to push him away, to remember the rules, to remember Victoria’s threats. But when Ryan’s arms wound around her waist, pulling her flush against his muscular frame, every wall she had built around her heart crumbled into dust. She buried her hands in his thick dark hair, returning the kiss with an intensity that left them both breathless.

For several minutes, the world outside ceased to exist. There were no social hierarchies, no bank balances, and no corporate mergers. There was only the heat of their breath in the quiet living room, the frantic beating of two hearts finding rhythm in the dark.

When Ryan finally pulled back, resting his forehead against hers, his breath was ragged. His blue eyes burned with a fierce, possessive tenderness. “Marry me, Elena. Not for the cameras. Not for six months. For real.”

The weight of his proposal fell on Elena like a bucket of ice water. The fantasy shattered. Reality rushed back in with violent clarity: Victoria’s sneering face, William’s threats to take Maya away, the risk to her sick father. If she said yes, she would become Ryan’s biggest vulnerability in a war he was already losing.

Elena placed her hands against Ryan’s broad chest and gently, firmly pushed him away.

“Elena?” Ryan asked, his brow furrowing in confusion and sudden pain.

“I can't,” she whispered, tears choking her voice. “Don’t you see what’s happening, Ryan? The more we care about each other, the easier it is for them to destroy us. Victoria will destroy my father’s life to get to you. And your father will use me to prove you’re unstable and unfit to raise Maya. I won’t let my presence cost you your daughter.”

“I don't care about the company, Elena! Let them have the shares!”

“Maya is not a share!” Elena shouted softly, her eyes blazing through her tears. “You think your father won’t sue for full custody? He has judges in his pocket! If you marry your broke assistant who has family baggage, they will paint this as a scandal. They will argue Maya is being raised in chaos. I won’t be the reason you lose your child, Ryan. I won’t.”

Ryan stared at her, the harsh truth of her words cutting deep into his pride. He knew she was right. William Ashford’s lawyers were ruthless vultures. A hasty, scandalous marriage would give his father the ammunition he needed in family court.

“So what are you saying?” Ryan asked, his voice shaking with restrained agony.

“I’m saying we finish the six months as business partners,” Elena said, her voice trembling but resolute. “We keep our hands to ourselves. We play our parts. And then... I leave.”

Before Ryan could reply, Elena turned and walked into the guest room, closing the door softly behind her. She collapsed against the wood, sliding down to the floor, burying her face in her knees as silent sobs wracked her body. She had just rejected the man she loved to save him from himself.

The next morning, the storm broke.

Elena woke up early, trying to compose herself before Maya woke up. She dressed in her simple work clothes—black trousers and a modest cream blouse—stripping away every trace of the Cinderella persona from the night before.

When she entered the kitchen, she found Ryan standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring out at the Manhattan sunrise. His phone was buzzing relentlessly on the island counter.

Elena picked up her tablet to check the daily news cycle, and the breath left her lungs in a sharp gasp.

Splashed across the front page of the major business tabloids was a grainy photograph of Ryan and Elena arguing outside the school days ago, followed by leaked internal memos from Ashford Global. The headline screamed in bold black ink:
