Chapter 2 - The Contract of Illusions

The mahogany dining room of the Ashford estate felt like a mausoleum. William Ashford slammed his silver fork onto the damask tablecloth. The clatter was sharp enough to slice through glass.

“You’re throwing away a fifty-million-dollar merger with Caldwell Shipping for a girl whose father probably fixes our utility lines!” William’s voice shook with aristocratic fury.

Victoria Caldwell stood up, her diamond tennis bracelets shimmering under the crystal chandelier. She smoothed the skirt of her couture dress, her eyes narrowing at Elena with icy condescension. “You think this little stunt gives you leverage, Ryan? You think you can parade your hired help in front of my family and humiliate me without consequences? You’ll regret this by tomorrow morning.”

Without waiting for an answer, Victoria swept out of the dining room, her high heels clicking a violent rhythm against the parquet floor. William glared at Ryan, his face mottled red. “Fix this, Ryan. Or I swear to God, the board will convene by Friday to reconsider your position as CEO.”

Ryan didn't answer. He took Elena’s cold hand, laced his fingers through hers, and led her through the massive double doors out into the cool evening air. The Ashford private car was waiting in the circular drive. The chauffeur held the door, and the moment they climbed into the leather interior and the privacy partition rose, the suffocating illusion vanished.

Elena instantly wrenched her hand away, retreating to the far corner of the backseat. “Are you completely insane?” she gasped, her voice trembling with adrenaline. “You kissed me! In front of your father, your grandmother, and the heiress of Caldwell Shipping!”

“I panicked,” Ryan said, running both hands through his thick dark hair, loosening his silk tie.

“You panicked? Billionaires don't panic by kissing their low-income assistants! You set off a nuclear bomb in your family’s living room and used me as a human shield!” Elena pressed her hands to her burning temples. “Do you know what people like Victoria Caldwell do to people like me? They crush us under their heels. She can get me blacklisted from every corporate job in this city before sunrise!”

Ryan stared at her. The anger in her voice was justified, but underneath it lay a deep, visceral terror—the raw vulnerability of someone who had fought every single day of her life for a shred of stability.

“I won’t let anyone hurt you, Elena,” Ryan said, his voice dropping into a solemn, low baritone. “I mean it.”

“You can’t protect me from your own world, Ryan! I’m an employee. This ends tomorrow morning. I’ll clear out my desk.”

“No,” Ryan said immediately. The thought of walking into his office and seeing an empty desk where she used to sit made his chest seize with sudden, suffocating panic. “You can’t quit.”

“Watch me.”

“One million dollars,” Ryan blurted out.

Elena froze, her hand hovering over the door handle. “What?”

“A contract. Six months. You pretend to be my fiancée in public. You attend the charity galas, the board dinners, and family functions. We show the board that I have a stable family unit, which neutralizes Victoria’s smear campaign and keeps my father from using Maya’s custody against me. In exchange, I will deposit one million dollars into your account tomorrow morning. Full legal indemnity. And when the six months are over, you can walk away with enough capital to start whatever business or life you want.”

Elena’s heart pounded against her ribs. One million dollars. That would pay off her father’s mounting medical bills from his chronic respiratory illness. It would pay off her student loans, secure a decent apartment in a safe neighborhood, and give her family financial freedom for the first time in generations.

“Why me, Ryan?” she whispered, searching his striking face in the dim amber light of the car. “You could hire a model. An actress. Someone who knows how to walk in three-thousand-dollar heels.”

“Because they don't know how to make pancakes with my daughter,” Ryan answered softly. “Because Maya trusts you. And because you’re the only person who looks at me and isn't afraid to tell me the truth.”

Elena closed her eyes. She knew she was stepping onto thin ice over an ocean of sharks. “Rules, Mr. Ashford. We need strict rules.”

“Name them.”

May you like

“Rule one: this is strictly business. No touching unless photographers or your family are watching. Rule two: Maya comes first. She cannot find out this is a fake arrangement. And rule three...” She looked dead into his intense blue eyes. “You don't ever kiss me like that again unless it is strictly necessary.”

Ryan swallowed hard, remembering the electric heat of her lips against his. “Agreed.”
