Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

The dawn broke over Genoa with a clear, golden sky, washing away the blood and rain of the previous night. By mid-morning, the syndicate underworld was reeling in absolute shock. The Falcone crime family had ceased to exist overnight. Stripped of their leader, their finances frozen, and their remaining captains surrendering to the Cattaneo banner, the decades-long turf war that had claimed dozens of lives was officially over.

Back at the Cattaneo villa in Lombardy, the grand salon was filled with a dozen high-ranking syndicate capos, dressed in somber black suits, waiting nervously for their Don. Whispers bounced off the frescoed ceilings. Rumors had spread like wildfire: Don Lorenzo had eradicated the Falcone syndicate not with an army of mercenaries, but led by a three-year-old child with grey eyes who had outmaneuvered an entire cartel.

The double doors opened.

Don Lorenzo walked in, dressed in a pristine bespoke navy suit. Beside him walked Sofia, elegant and radiant in a simple emerald silk dress, her dark hair pinned up with pearl barrettes. But walking between them, holding both their hands, was Mia.

She wore a custom-tailored miniature black suit made of Italian wool, complete with satin lapels, tiny polished dress shoes, and a gold-plated Cattaneo family crest pinned to her breast pocket. In her ear sat a real, operational micro-transceiver connected to the estate's encrypted security network.

The capos immediately stood at attention, bowing their heads in deep, fearful respect.

Lorenzo walked to the head of the long mahogany conference table, but instead of sitting in the Don’s massive leather throne, he gently lifted Mia and placed her on the seat. She sat up straight, crossing her small legs, her hands resting authoritatively on the armrests.

""Gentlemen,"" Lorenzo announced, his voice echoing with absolute authority across the room. ""For four years, the Cattaneo family has been divided by grief and vengeance. That era ends today. The Falcone territory in Genoa, Turin, and Venice now belongs to us. But we will not govern through fear and chaos anymore.""

Lorenzo placed a loving hand on Sofia's shoulder, drawing her close. ""This is Sofia Ferraro Cattaneo. My wife, and the matriarch of this house. Any disrespect shown to her will be answered with immediate execution.""

The capos bowed even lower, murmuring their unified allegiance. ""Yes, Donna Sofia.""

Lorenzo then gestured to the little girl sitting on the throne. ""And this is Mia. My daughter, my sole legal heir, and the supreme commander of my security detail.""

A few capos exchanged bewildered glances, but after seeing Silvio’s fate, none dared utter a syllable of doubt.

""What are your orders, Don Lorenzo?"" asked Gianni, the Turin lieutenant.

Lorenzo looked at Mia with a proud, loving smile. ""I don't give the orders on Tuesdays. The Bodyguard does. Mia?""

Mia pulled her clipboard onto her lap, picking up a gold Montblanc pen. She looked down the long table at the hardened, battle-scarred men with total seriousness. ""First rule: No mud on the carpets. Wipe your shoes outside.""

""Understood, Miss Mia,"" Gianni replied earnestly, not daring to smile.

""Second rule: All the bad men’s money from the docks goes to the children's hospital in Naples,"" she commanded, remembering the sick babies she had seen when her mother was struggling to buy medicine. ""And they get ice cream on Fridays.""

Lorenzo chuckled softly, nodding to Fausto. ""Draft the philanthropic trust immediately, Fausto. Five million euros per quarter to the pediatric wing in Naples.""

""And rule number three?"" Lorenzo asked, kissing the top of Mia's head.

Mia leaned into her father’s chest, the fierce warrior persona finally melting away into the sweet, sleepy exhaustion of a three-year-old child. ""Rule number three... Daddy stays home on weekends to watch cartoons.""

A warm ripple of respectful chuckles passed through the grand hall, and for the second time in eleven years, Don Lorenzo Cattaneo laughed—a deep, joyful sound that echoed through the home he had finally reclaimed.
